One in five Americans who work shorter hours at their job in order to provide care for an elderly relative save society millions of dollars that would ordinarily be required for nursing homes or other longterm care facilities.

(a)
(b) One in five Americans working shorter hours at their job in order to provide care for elderly relative saves
(c) The one in five Americans who work shorter hours at a job in order to provide care for an elderly relative saves
(d) Those Americans, approximately one-fifth of all employees, who work shorter hours at a job in order to care for an elderly relative save
(e) Providing care for an elderly relative, approximately one-fifth of all American employees work shorter hours at a job and it saves x

Though not convinced,
a)
(b) One in five Americans working shorter hours at their job in order to provide care for elderly relative saves
(c) The one in five Americans who work shorter hours at a job in order to provide care for an elderly relative saves
(d) Those Americans, approximately one-fifth of all employees, who work shorter hours at a job in order to care for an elderly relative save
(e) Providing care for an elderly relative, approximately one-fifth of all American employees work shorter hours at a job and it saves x


A,B - their is wrong here, it should be singular as One is singular
C- The one is wrong
becoz it points out to one specific american
E - akwatd
So IMO D.

I try for exclusion...

A) is wrong because the verb should be WORKS, not work and SAVES, not save

E) is not parallel between "one fifth work / it saves"

C) The one who work is wrong, should be WORKS

B) is wrong because it is not clear whether those "who save millions" are 1/5 of those who work shorter hours to take care of the elderly or 1/5 of the total employees...

So I would say D

IMO also A

One in Five Americans is plural not singular. 1 in five Americans is just a ratio. It does not literally mean 1 American out of a total of 5. It could mean 10 Americans out of 50 also.

B, E are ruled out because they use the singular 'saves'.
The 1 in 5 is wrong...No need for 'the'.

A is better worded than C. 1/5th of all employees in C sounds awkward.

'Their' is fine in A as it correctly refers to One in Five Americans.

Choice D changes the meaning of the sentence.

Those Americans, approximately one-fifth of all employees, who work shorter hours at a job in order to care for an elderly relative save.

approximately one fifth of all employees... of the world? of America? This is too vague and hence incorrect.

Whereas choice A has no such ambiguity. imo A

it is true that if "One in five Americans" is plural, A is clearly correct...

B - working wrong use of continuous tense.
C - The one problem.
D - Awkward and wordy
E - Alters the meaning

A doesn't read well to me. It seems to say that of the Americans that stay home to care for a relative, only 1 in 5 save the country money.

One of the <plural noun> + that/who+ Plural verb

In A, work is plural verb for subject Americans....correct
their is referring American........correct
save should be referring to Americans.....correct


(b) One in five Americans working shorter hours at their job in order to provide care for elderly relative saves
(c) The one in five Americans who work shorter hours at a job in order to provide care for an elderly relative saves
(d) Those Americans, approximately one-fifth of all employees, who work shorter hours at a job in order to care for an elderly relative save

d and E change meaning and hence wrong
