divison and remainder

by bfman » Thu Jul 30, 2009 6:55 pm
Q: When 15 is divided by y, the remainder is y-3. If y must be an integer, what are all the possible values of y?

I got 3, 6, and 9.

Book also includes 18. I don't understand how 18 is possible?

15/18 ???

Yup. When 15 is divided by 18 , the remainder would be 15 (18-3).

Hence satisfies the condition.

How does this work???

15/18 =

0.8
18 |---------
150
144
------
7 (remainder)

That was if the question said 18/15, but the questions says 15/18. and also the remainder has to equal y (denominator) minus 3. So I don't understand how there can be an 18 there as one of the answers.

thanks.

we must only consider integral quotient, since numerator is less than the denominator, the numerator is the remainder

yn+y-3=15
y=18/1+n ;y is positive integer >=3
n=0,1,2,5,8,17 give you integer values of y>=3
y=18,6,3
The powers of two are bloody impolite!!
