Is x – 1/16 greater than 5/8?

(1) Four times the value of x is less than three.

(2) One third of two is less than the value of x.

Question stem x -1/16 > 5/8

x > 5/8 + 1/16
x > 11/16 ?


Statement I
4x < 3
x < 12/16
X could be greater than 11/16 and less than 11/16, insufficient.

Statement II

2/3 < x

first statement it worked fine, but second statement I cant think of anything except to actually calculate 11/16 and see if it matches both the statements. But then again I cant think of any other way how to get this thing done.

Whats the source?

question asks if x>5/8+1/16 ie x>11/16
Stmt I says
4x<3
x<3/4
x<12/16
so we can't find if x is greater or less than 11/16

Stmt II says
2/3<x
x>2/3
now we can't readily compare 2/3 with 11/16 and it seems they are pretty close to each other.
2/3=32/48
and 11/16=33/48
since x>32/48 we can't say if x is greater or less than 33/48

taking both statements together, we see that
36/48 (ie 3/4)>x>32/48
x can still be greater or less than 33/48

so E.

Well I dont like there explanation 1 bit, i think Mozartain has done a better job than MGMAT.

glad that you liked it. but i reckon converting to decimals might be a better idea for many people.
