CR - Weaken the argument

by gauravgundal » Wed Jul 08, 2009 1:54 am
In 2001, a local high school implemented a new program designed to reduce the incidence of teenage pregnancy. The program, however, failed to produce the desired result . If the program had been successful, the dropout rate for female students would not have increased substantially in 2001

The argument in the passage would be most seriously weakened if it were true that

-> the number of female students in the school has remained constant for the past decade.
-> nationwide, the teen pregnancy rate and the female high sxhool dropout rate both increased significantly in 2001.
-> some female students who dropped out were pregnant at the home.
-> many female high school dropouts said that poor economic conditions forced them to leave school and find jobs.
-> the scholl also implemented a program designed to reduce the incident of drug use among teenagers in 2001.

Why Choice c can't be the answer .

IMO D
C can't be because it supports and not weaken the argument. So female students dropped because they were pregnant. thats what the argument says.
We need to prove that the dropouts were not because of pregnancy
The powers of two are bloody impolite!!

You got it wrong!!! What option C is saying is that SOME female students got pregnant at home. period. It doesn't talk about MOST of the other female students. What if Most of the Female students got pregnant at school and thats the reason why they dropped out.

Always remember when a choice says "some" it means that a "few of them" it could be something like 10% of the total. So always think what about the 90% of the them???

Now if the statement said MOST of the female students got pregnant at Home then the choice could possibly weaken but still it depends as here Choice D is undoubtedly the best choice as it points out that the reason why they dropped out is because of the economic conditions and not pregnancy!!!

In my opinion D is the most logical one.
