CR - Identify conclusion

by karthikpandian19 » Sat Jun 30, 2012 3:34 am
Many people who commission the building of their own home, in order to save money, do not opt to build homes that meet sustainability standards. However, such thinking is short-sighted: buildings which meet sustainability standards are far more energy efficient, generating lower electricity and gas bills, requiring fewer repairs, and consuming far less water.

The author is arguing that __________.

(A) The additional money spent to build sustainable homes will eventually result in a decrease in other costs to homeowners

(B) Higher utility bills and water consumption will discourage homeowners from building homes that do not meet sustainability standards

(C) Many homes that do not meet sustainability standards will eventually be replaced by homes that do

(D) Individuals who commission homes usually cannot afford to spend more on homes that meet sustainability standards

(E) Individuals will not save money by building non-sustainable homes because they will need expensive energy efficient appliances to lower energy costs

OA is A

We must identify the main conclusion of the argument.

The argument first states that some people choose to have homes built that do not meet certain standards because homes that meet the standards are more expensive. However, it then says that the more expensive homes generate lower bills. The correct answer is likely to mention both the higher upfront costs of sustainable homes and the long-term savings on utilities.

Choice A says that "spending additional money" leads to "a decrease in other costs to homeowners." Choice A incorporates both premises. Choice A is correct.

Choice B: Out of scope. The author never indicates whether the "higher utility bills" associated with homes that do not meet sustainability standards will "discourage" people from building them.

Choice C: Irrelevant. This argument is not about "replacing" one type of home with another in the long term. This does not summarize anything in the argument.

Choice D: Unsupported. While it is said that drivers commission non-sustainable homes to save money, there is no reason to assume that they "cannot afford" sustainable homes.

Choice E: Irrelevant. The author does not mention how owners of non-sustainable homes will "lower energy costs," or even whether they are motivated to do so. In addition, the argument makes no mention of "energy efficient appliances."
