If use of the overhead bins on commercial airlines were restricted to handbags and small pieces of luggage, most rolling suitcases would have to be stored in the plane's cargo hold. The reduced number of rolling suitcases in the overhead flight bins would greatly reduce the number of accidents during in-flight turbulence.

The conclusion drawn in the first sentence depends on which of the following assumptions?

(A) The cargo hold would not be as convenient a place to store rolling suitcases as are the overhead bins in which they are currently stored.

(B) Most cargo holds could not easily accommodate the increased number of rolling suitcases.

(C) Handbags would be more likely to cause accidents in the cargo hold than would rolling suitcases.

(D) Most rolling suitcases would not be considered small pieces of luggage.

(E) A reduction in accidents during in-flight turbulence would allow more luggage to be stored in overhead bins.

The conclusion here is that over head bins should be restricted to small pieces of luggage and not rolling suitcases.

So, the correct assumption is that rolling suitcases do not fall in the category of small luggage and should be restricted to cargos.

A is incorrect
B is incorrect
C is incorrect
D is correct
E is incorrect

Hence, D!

OA is D

This question asks us to determine the assumption made in the first sentence only. That means we can ignore the second sentence for this example; it is extraneous to the question.

The author states that restricting access to overhead bins to just handbags and small pieces of luggage would force most rolling suitcases to be stored in the cargo hold. There's a difference in terms here: the restriction mentions bags other than handbags and small luggage, and the consequence affects most rolling suitcases.

The author must assumes that rolling suitcases must not qualify as "small pieces of luggage." This must be the case if the proposed restrictions against large rolling suitcases will force most rolling suitcases to the cargo hold.

Choice A focuses on convenience, which is irrelevant to the author's argument in the first sentence.

Choices B and C focus erroneously on what happens after the rolling suitcases are moved into the cargo hold, which is not the issue in the first sentence. Choice C also gets the situation backwards. The argument is predicated on the idea that rolling suitcases cause more accidents than handbags or small pieces of luggage, and this choice states the opposite.

Choice D states the assumption that we're looking for. Most rolling suitcases must be considered large pieces of luggage; otherwise they would be allowed in the overhead bins, and the new restriction would not affect them.

Choice E discusses the overall number of pieces of luggage that may be stored in the bin. This is not about rolling suitcases and is irrelevant to the conclusion drawn in the first sentence.

Choice D is correct.
