The average cruise ship sailing from Island X to Island Y arrives with between 500 and 600 gallons of fuel remaining in its tank. Therefore, if a cruise ship embarks from Island X and arrives at Island Y with 300 gallons of fuel remaining in its tank, its fuel use for this trip has been greater than the average for cruise ships.

Which of the following indicates a logical flaw in the argument above?

A
Some cruise ships use less than 500 gallons of fuel in sailing from Island X to Island Y.
B
Some cruise ships arrive at Island Y with over 700 gallons of fuel in their tanks.
C
The amount of fuel in the tanks of cruise ships departing Island X could vary.
D
Fuel is used not only to move cruise ships but also for other necessary functions of these ships.
E
Greater fuel use doesn't necessarily imply inefficient fuel use.

IMO C.

The amount with which the ships start the journey may vary hence varying the unused fuel at the end of journey .

C . The argument assumes that all cruise ships leave Island X with the same amount of Fuel

Conclusion : its fuel use for this trip has been greater than the average for cruise ships.

For C to be true it should have been stated like this:

Passage does NOT consider that the amount of fuel in the tanks of cruise ships departing Island X could vary.

What is the OA ?

The stimulus says a ship that reached Y from X had 300 gallons left in its tank less than the 500 to 600 gallons left in the tank of an average ship that undertakes the same journey. Here it is assumed that all ships start the journey with the same amount of fuel. So if the ships do not start with the same amount of fuel then the fuel left after the journey may also differ. Hence C.
