genetic therapy

by YellowSapphire » Sun Aug 01, 2010 1:48 am
Due to significant advances in biotechnology, experts predict that within years, doctors will be able to trace the genetic roots of common medical problems such as depression and bi-polar syndrome. As a result, some physicians predict that these conditions and others like them will be all but eliminated through early identification and genetic therapy.

The argument above is based most heavily upon which of the following assumptions?

A) There is one and only one strategy for eliminating common medical problems such as depression.
B) Common medical problems such as depression are based entirely on treatable genetic malformations.
C) Within years, genetics will be the only important scientific field in detecting and treating common medical problems such as depression.
D) Every member of the human race has at least one genetic defect.
E) Each human defect or sickness can be traced in part to genetics.

I could not understand conclusion. I made past of the conclusion in blue.

Yes, but I could not understand your explanation.

Can someone answer my Q?

IMO B

The conclusion says that once the genetic roots of common medical problems such as depression and bi-polar syndrome are known, these problems can be eliminated through early identification and genetic therapy. We have to bridge the gap between identifying the genetic roots and eliminating the problems, which is only possible when the treatment for such genetic defects is available and B confirms the same thing.[/quote]

Hi Neha Patni,

Do you belong to N. K. Patni (patni computer systems). I mean nearer or too far relative. I am sorry to ask this.

It makes sense. The difficulty I faced here is that I could not understood the conclusion properly. Thanks

Mostly I solve assumption questions by adding options in the passage. Let's see how it works.

Due to significant advances in biotechnology, experts predict that within years, doctors will be able to trace the genetic roots of common medical problems such as depression and bi-polar syndrome. Common medical problems such as depression are based entirely on treatable genetic malformations. As a result, some physicians predict that these conditions and others like them will be all but eliminated through early identification and genetic therapy.
