A question about participle

The Glass House Mountains in Queensland, Australia, were sighted in 1770 by the English navigator Caption James Cook, by whom they were named supposedly because its sheer wet rocks glistered like glass.

A. by whom they were named supposedly because its
B. by whom they were named supposedly and their
C. naming them supposedly since their
D. who so named them supposedly because their
E. who so named it since supposedly

(B) Originally developed for detecting air pollutants, having the ability to analyze the chemical elements in almost any substance without destroying it, a technique called proton induced x-ray emission

Well, both of these are chosen from OG12.I have a question about the participle. In OG12, it explains that naming cannot modifies James Cook, then I believe it must describe the subject of the sentence. But in the second sentence, the OG tells me that having cannot modifies the subject--technique but modifies the first sub-sentencce.
Then, I am confused...what does the participle modifies?can anybody explains?THX :)
