From 320 to 500 Dissapointed

From last 1 and half months i am prep for gmat. I am studying from Priceton review and OG 12, my 1st gmat prep score was 320 Q29 V11.
Today after so much prep i gave gmat prep and scored 510 Q36 V22. I always thought that my english is pretty good but it is so not true...
I am very dissapointed by my score my dreams are very big....Please suggest me how to improve my scores and take it to High 600 atleast. I need to improve on quant as well but verbal big problem.

Prateek,

Its easy to get dissapointed but look at the bright side. You have managed an almost 200 point leap in 1 and a half month.
This obviously means you are doing something right. You are headed in the right direction, take encouragement from that result and work ahead, don't let it bog you down.

Also, if you could share how you go about your prep, we can maybe discuss in greater detail.

The key is going to be practice, and lots of it, particularly your weak points, review concepts and topics that give you trouble, and keep on practicing problems to build up your speed and learn necessary techniques, you'll get to your goal in time

Thank you for ur suggesion, i am quite motivated after reading your reply...

Well after my 1st gmat prep score 320, i thought somethin is not right, i understood that my basics are not clear so again reviewed princeton review whole book with og 12 practice, with this i have started practicing on grockit.com a very nic website for practice.

After spending 1 and half months doin all this 1 got 510, now i have got myself a Manhattan for SC, Critical reasoning bible for CR coz i need improvemnt in both the sections.

For quant i dont want to review princeton 3rd time so i have got myself Kaplan 800 coz my basics are fine now need tougher practice.

Hope after two more weeks of practice i will gain 100 points atleast.

Another problem is that i am very lazy in studying , so the more time i take in gmat preparation it will be tougher for me.. so have decided to take gmat in september 3rd week.

Hey Prateek,

I completely get what your saying. I have had a very intensive 1 month (Finished the entire knewton course with extra practice and CAT's) and and now suddenly I have gotten a little slow.
I think I have burned myself and its time for a break. Hopefully after a short break I can get back to my earlier study schedule.

I hope your prep is going strong. The date is pretty close. Keep me posted how things are shaping up. I hope you are seeing the desired improvement.

Hi akhil

The only problem with me is that i am too much contended with gmat books....Have to finish few books and start practicing cat exams again......

How bout you when are you starting you prep.

Improve SC = Instant Gratification on Verbal!

MGMAT SC is a great resource.
Improve understanding of Subject-verb-agreement + Idioms
If you get faster on SC, you'll have more time to tackle CR and RC
This will *most likely* boost your Verbal score :-)

Hi Prateek

I just took the Gmat today. Got a 700. Not too happy however . But one thing is for sure the GMAC, especially on the verbal section, is ridiculously biased towards native test takers. I got almost 17-18 SCs with a lot of questions that had idiomatic errors in them. These errors are easy to spot for native speakers. I would suggest you to go through a document that contains all the SC question from Gmatprep.you can find that on the gmatclub website . Do all the questions and refer to the manhattan gmat forums for explanations .review all of them carefully. I found that manhattan forum pretty late . But they have beautiful explanations by Ron and Stacey. Gmatprep question are the most indicative of the Gmat . stick to those I d suggest .!

Sometimes a perceived weakness is a strength. I didn't grow up in this country, but I noticed early on that even though my oral English was probably not as good (or at least not as fluent) as American (native) speakers, some parts of my written English was better.

Sometimes because you did not grow up speaking English a certain way means it may be easier to write it the right way.

Hi mirantdon

1st of all Dont be dissapointed you got a excellent score......secondly you are right it becomes really difficult to track errors which look absolutly fine. One of the resons could be we are so used to speak that kind of English......Its just not about a indian asian or american.....even a irish or english man face these kind of issues.

Regarding manhattan gmat there is no doubt that they got the best look a like gmat ques...but with quant i prefer Kaplan.

And bro i will definatly chekc gmatclub reg sc ques.

Well I prepared for about three months. I took a lot of tests. My test scores fluctuated. Sometimes I did feel that I had reached a saturation while I was at 650. But then you need a radical change in your approach.
I came across thursdays with Ron .The sessions were pretty interesting. In fact I loved them.
At times you will feel that the GMAT is playing Cat and mouse with you .But remember the cat does nt have the bell :-) You have to put it. Today I came across several decoy answers.
If you have read the powerscore CR in which it talks about SHELL GAME ANSWERS. Trust me I found loads of them.Especially in Verbal- always connect with what you are reading.
I used the following books

1.OG 12th and Verbal review
2.Manhattan Strat Guides
3.Powerscore CR
4.Aristotle SC Grail

I took the MasterGMAT weekly course - In one word -"lovely".Later I took a lot of tests later.

Power Prep 2 500 Q36 V22 (03/08/11)
Kaplan CAT 2 460 Q28 V26 (09/09/11)
PR CAT 1 360 Q32 V09 (11/09/11)
MGMAT CAT 420 Q33 V17 (12/09/11)

I guess it rare to see scores declining like this......I know i need to work in both the sections but majorly in Verbal......Confused where to start ? should i again start reading my basic books.....

Kaplan 800( havent started yet)
Manhattan SC(started reading)
OG 12 (completed)

Havent Test myself on Gmat prep yet..Guess will write it day after!!!!!

any suggestions on how to improve my scores drastically are welcomed.....
