If set S consists of even number of integers, is the median of set negative?
1.Exactly half of all elements of set S are positive.
2.The largest negative element of set S is -1.

Ans given - D

Not sure if the ans is right

1.Exactly half of all elements of set S are positive

let total be 6, so 3 elements are positive and 3 are negative

let the elements be -1,-1,-1,1,1,1
Median: 0

let the elements be -1,-1,-1,4,5,6
Median : 1.5

let the elemnets be -10,-10,-10,1,1,1
Median : -4.5

Not sufficent

2) The largest negative element of set S is -1

Consider this,

-10,-9,-1,1,2,3

Median:0

-10,-9,-8,-3,-1,0

Median: -5.5

-1,10,20,30,40,50

Median: 25

Not sufficient

IMO:C

Med = 0.5

{-3, -1, -1, 1, 5, 10}
Med = 0

So, IMO - E

Please correct me if wrong..
ZERO(O) is considered a positive integer!!
Hence from 1 and 2, median is always Positive, making C the choice!

understood.. thanks again..
I thought the question was "is the median positive"

Zero is neither +ve nor -ve

Hi,

Just to clear any confusion, 0 is not a positive integer. Its a non-negative OR a non-positive integer.

Questions asks if median is negative ? Also it tells that elements are INTEGERS.

so combining both stats the lowest value of median we can obtain is 0 from the set {-1,1} {since it is given that exactly half the elements are positive so the lowest positive INTEGER can be 1 coupled with a negative 1 from stat 2.}
Cheers !!
