In recent years

by bubbliiiiiiii » Tue Apr 19, 2011 10:17 am
In recent years cattle breeders have increasingly used crossbreeding, in part that their steers should acquire certain characteristics and partly because cross breeding is said to provide vigor.

(A) in part that their steers should acquire certain characteristics
(B) in part for the acquisition of certain characteristics in their steers
(C) partly because of their steers acquiring certain characteristics
(D) partly because certain characteristics should be acquired by their steers
(E) partly to acquire certain characteristics in their steers

OA Later

Pranay

To maintain Parallelism either D or c
But c makes it seems as if the Crossbreeding is taking place because the steers have acquired certain characteristics and not because the owners want the steers to acquire certain characteristics. So D
But the OA is E

Well i guess there must be dilemma of choosing D or E .

D is incorrect because it uses "should be" --> that disrupts the meaning of sentence , are we sure that the required characteristics will appear if crossbreeding is done . Its unfair to say "because characteristics should be aquired by their steers" as its not decesion of steers whether to acquire the characteristics or not .

E describes the intent by saying "to acquire", so its a better option.

I guess steers = Noun and not verb
Breeders want their steers to acquire certain characteristics.

E is good but highly confusing... we can also read as if breeders want to acquire some characteristics of cattle. "partly to acquire characteristics" "in cattle"..

+1 for E
First take: 640 (50M, 27V) - RC needs 300% improvement
Second take: coming soon..

@Munda Singh: I guess both of us think on same lines. Even I picked up D as my answer but when I saw OA it turned out to be E.

@AIM GMAT:Buddy, thanks for pointing out the difference in D and E. I guess myself and Munda Singh were looking at that explanation.

@Atul: Dude, I am amazed to see only your option posted without reasoning. People in the forum, especially myself, have many a times gained from your fundas posted. So, please keep posting your explanations as well.

Thanks for the appreciation Pranay...i was actually enjoying the discussion..

anyways i share my technique which i developed from the questions i experienced so far...

first of all word STEERS i believe its a noun and its dictionary meaning as a noun is

a young male of cattle family that has had its GMAT organs removed, and which is usually kept for meat...

But, I don't think that its important to know the meaning, and thats where technique comes in...

Look at the first clause,

In recent years cattle breeders have increasingly used crossbreeding

The moment i read this clause i got a killer instinct that the phrase which follow this clause gonna describe why this action has been performed means why breeders used crossbreeding???...

for Op D, I believe its suggesting the same thing as of OA Op E, the only difference is Op D is saying that thing in a passive and awkward way...

see this word PARTLY its an adverb, so i think its describing the action of preceding clause...that means u try to rephrase Op D and Op E as

Op D--rephrased version

cattle breeders have increasingly used crossbreeding partly because certain characteristics should be acquired by their steers

Op E--rephrased version

cattle breeders have increasingly used crossbreeding partly to acquire certain characteristics in their steers

Now if u see both options implies same outcome, that is, because of crossbreeding steers acquire something...but Op E is strong in tone..as it contains infinitive...

The mob is protesting on the road to block traffic.
(the mob wants to block the traffic--> final result(block traffic) is intentional )

The mob is protesting on the road, blocking traffic.
(the mob only wants to protest but since they are protesting on the road hence in consequence the traffic blocked--> final result(block traffic) is unintentional)

Coming back to the topic, if u see the last part of non underlined portion " cross breeding is said to provide vigor." this part also contains an infinitive and this gives a clue that the underlined portion should also possess strong tone and thats why should us an infinitive...

This is my opinion and analysis
