"comparisons of" vs "comparing"

by aspirant2011 » Sat Apr 23, 2011 12:33 am
Many investors base their choice between bonds and stocks on comparing bond yields to the dividends available on common stocks.

(A) between bonds and stocks on comparing bond yields to
(B) among bonds and stocks on comparisons of bond yields to
(C) between bonds and stocks on comparisons of bond yields with
(D) among bonds and stocks on comparing bond yields and
(E) between bonds and stocks on comparing bond yields with
C vs E which one is better and why????

OA: C
Comparison:----> a proper Noun

Comparing:-----> a gerund, in Op E "comparing bond yields"

Yields ---> Noun
Bond------> Adjective
Comparing--> Adverb --->> suspicious and m not sure that comparing is an adverb or not.

Hence i opt OP C

A and E sound as if the investors base their choice on *comparing* -> choice shud be on the outcome of the comparision bet X and Y, not on whether they are compared or not.
i will go wth C

VERB-ING retains the subject of the clause.

Example:
They have made good score on playing cricket.
-->it means that they play cricket.

Look at the option E.
E means that many investors compare bond yields. The intended meaning of the sentence is not this.
And hence C is the answer.
