D ?

A and B have incorrect comparison.
C - taking X is done - incorrect.
E - no referent of they; missing comma.

Like and unlike clause are not suppose to have verbs in them. A, B and C have verbs.

E is wrong because we are comparing 'the usage' with 'they', whereas 'they' is not clear.

D is correct

In the option E, "they" is ambiguous.

Can they refer to the object of preposition?

Experts, please help.

Another problem with E :

Whereas is a conj. that should connect two independent sentence. In this case we have a phrase in first part (before whereas) that makes this option totally wrong.
