According to Herbert Essame, Patton might have accomplished more had he not been held in check by his superiors, Alexander in the Mediterranean and Eisenhower n Europe.

(A) had he not been held in check by his superiors
(B) had his superiors not held him in check
(C) if his superiors had not held him in check
(D) if he was not held in check by his superiors
(E) when not held in check by his superiors

please elaborate ur answer

IMO A, the part after comma 'Alexander...' modifies superiors, so we can keep B and C aside. D -> incorrect usage of verb. This statement represents as action that continued till some time, and because of than Patton couldn't accomplish much, E -> awkward

B&C are ruled out immediately because Alexander needs to follow superiors ... so these two introduce Misplaced modifier errors

E is out because of when

Between A & D ... A is right ...

D - it is a simple past tense ...which means activity was happened only once in the past ...but two instances are already given in the sentence of the past....

IMO A

The succeding sentence has Noun Alex and ...

So the underline sentence should end with somthing which should point to the succeeding noun.

So A , D ,E remains

E - when is used only with "time"

D - if should be used when
1) subjunctive
2) ondition if x then y

So A wins

IMO between A, and D,

It should be D,

because, in A had he not been held (is in passive voice)

have accompalished is present perfect, so past tense should be fine in, if he was not held

I think there are 2 actions here, he might have accomplished more and held in check . accomplished more is the later action and held in check is the first action. So past perfect tense is suitable despite the passive voice. Will go with A.

(A) had he not been held in check by his superiors

this correctly implies the continuity that he was held in check for a long time

Ex: Federer would have won French Open earlier had he not been held in check by his challenger, Nadal.

Here we mean that he was held in check for a long time.

(B) had his superiors not held him in check
this is clearly out for reason explained by others.

(C) if his superiors had not held him in check
this is clearly out for reason explained by others.

(D) if he was not held in check by his superiors
it implies that he was held in check ONCE.

Ex: Federer would have won French Open earlier if he was not held in check by his challenger, Nadal.

Here it means that he was held in check once.

(E) when not held in check by his superiors
what is 'when' doing here?

IMO in "D"....we need if...he were....

since this is a hypothetical case...so if...he....was is wrong....
