Dr. Hegsted argues that just as polio vaccine is given to every person to protect the few who might actually contract polio, mass dietary change is needed to protect the significant number who are susceptible to the life-threatening effects of press eating habits.

(A) just as polio vaccine is given to every person to protect the few who might actually contract polio
(B) like polio vaccine, which is given to every person to protect the few who might contract polio
(C) similar to polio vaccine which is given to every person in order to protect the few who might actually contract polio
(D) while, to protect the few who might actually contract polio, polio vaccine is given to every person
(E) similar to the giving of polio vaccine to every person in order to protect the few who might contract polio actually

I'm confused between A and B

The OA is A

Kindly Explain as to why is A the right OA and not B

regards,
apoorva

When I solved this problem, I picked up B too.

But there was a particular post in this forum that said
like is used for nouns and as is used for actions.

e.g. Christopher has habits just like Robin.
but, He writes on paper as a printing press does.

well you r right mate....

I have received few explanations which makes sense to me...might as well help you

1.) parallelism: polio vaccine cannot be directly compared to dietary change, hence B is wrong.

option A corrects this, as giving polio medicine is comparable to changing dietary habits

2.) we are not merely comparing two nouns or noun phrases i.e. 'polio vaccine' and 'mass dietary change' but we are actually comparing the effects of these medicines on different types of patients also.
Since the two actions or effects can only be described by two clauses and not only by two nouns, we need to use a conjunction to join the clauses and not a preposition 'like'

I chose A for another reason as well.

B unecessarily introduces the modifier which. The comparison does not require a modifier.
Things are much more simpler and cleaner in A.

B distorts the meaning.

" Dr. Hegsted argues like polio vaccine, "

Come on guys from when did polio vaccine start arguing

how about this question

Like Edvard Grieg, whom the Scandinavians long refused to recognize, the Italians’ disregard for Verdi persisted for a decade after his critical acclaim in France and Austria.

(A) Like Edvard Grieg, whom the Scandinavians long refused to recognize,
(B) Like Edvard Grieg, who the Scandinavians long refused to recognize,
(C) Just as Edvard Grieg was long refused recognition by the Scandinavians,
(D) Just as the Scandinavians long refused to recognize Edvard Grieg, so
(E) Like the Scandinavians’ long refusal to recognize Edvard Grieg

which is correct, and why

(A) Like Edvard Grieg the Italians’ disregard for Verdi
(B) Like Edvard Grieg the Italians’ disregard for Verdi
(C) Just as Edvard Grieg was long refused recognition by the Scandinavians,

What is refused ?

(D) Just as the Scandinavians long refused to recognize Edvard Grieg, so the Italians’ disregard for Verdi

Clause vs Noun

(E) Like the Scandinavians’ long refusal to recognize Edvard Grieg,
the Italians’ disregard for Verdi persisted for a decade after his critical acclaim in France and Austria.

Scandinavians’ long refusal to recognize Edvard Grieg has to be parallel with Italians’ disregard for Verdi.

Only E has it so IMO:E

logitec, do you mean that it is not logic to compare "Scandinavian refused" with "disregard persisted" though the comparison is grammatical?

logitec

like you, I lean gmat

this mean "I and you are similar because we both lean gmat", is that right? if this is right, why B in Q 104, in OG 11 is wrong. pls read the thread of this question

Nuclear fusion is the force that powers the Sun, the Stars and hydrogen bombs, merging the nuclei of atoms and not splitting them apart, as in nuclear reactors.

we can get rid of the part between , ........, in order to analyze this question

Nuclear fusion is the force that powers the Sun, the Stars and hydrogen bombs as in nuclear reactors

A is wrong because it sounds like there are bombs in nuclear reactors

B. Nuclear fusion is the force that powers the Sun, the Stars and hydrogen bombs like nuclear reactors

Here the comparison is UNCLEAR and WRONG and it almost sounds like bombs are similiar to nuclear bombs

and also this option uses INSTEAD OF, which is less preferable compared to RATHER THAN

C. Nuclear fusion is the force that powers the Sun, the Stars and hydrogen bombs as nuclear reactors do

This is a more clear comparison and hence the correct answer

Let's see what other people have to say.

Logitech, why do you say that? Is this true in any case?

Dr. Hegsted argues that just as polio vaccine is given to every person to protect the few who might actually contract polio, mass dietary change is needed to protect the significant number who are susceptible to the life-threatening effects of press eating habits

Here we are comparing two opposite effects. Polio is actually affecting a few but dietary change is affecting a significant number. So D might be correct answer. I am not sure.

Someone throw some light.
