"No matter how patiently they explain their reasons for confiscating certain items" modifies custom officers. (D) and (E) remains.

(D) is grammatically correct

D for me.. the non underlined portion of the sentence should modify customs inspectors ..hence A,B and C are out. E is gramatically incorrect.

Hi,

IMO D.

D and E are possible contenders. I have eliminated E - because of sentence construciton.

crazy4gmat & Bidisha800 : Can you explain what is grammatically incorect in E?

Regards,

Karthi

When you use 'instead of' it usually signifies replacement. For example :

I ate carrots instead of beans. ( carrots and bananas are both edible and you can technically eat carrots instead of beans ).
I will do physical labor instead of this job ( the verbs signify similar action here )

where as ...

Travelers treat customs officers like poachers instead of government officials - You cannot replace poachers with government officials so instead of doesn't make sense. So we use 'rather than'.

Hope this helps.
