Two activities : (1) burn as much as 30 percent less fuel than gasoline engines of comparable size and (2) emitting far less carbon dioxide gas and far fewer ...

IMO its important for us to note that (2) and (1) and not related activities, rather (2) is an effect of (1). Therefore one of the possible ways to show that (2) is indeed an effect of (1) is to use 'VERBING OF (2) ie EMITTING

That leaves us only (a) and (e).

(e) is wrong for the usage of 'THAT HAVE A COMPARABLE SIZE' - wordier than OF COMPARABLE SIZE. Secondly, the use of HAVING BEEN shows that emitting started before the burning actually commenced, making the sentence nonsensical

IMO A

OA is A

Will this be correct?

Diesel engines burn as much as 30 percent less fuel than gasoline engines of comparable size, as well as emit far less carbon dioxide gas and far fewer of the other gases that have been implicated in global

I understand why all other choices are incorrect. But why use 'emitting'?

I have a similar explanation as stated above but have few more things based on which i can narrow down to the answer
1) THEY in the answer choices can refer to gasoline or desiel engines but we want it to be referred to deisel engines only so C,D are gone...
2)HAVING BEEN --- seem to be awakward...if anyone have a better explanation for this please help...So B,E are gone......
We are left with only A....Thats my Answer...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If i am WRONG plz CORRECT, If i am correct and cleared the doubt plz thank :)

Hi i have a small question after reading through your explanation...
Can i make a generalized statement saying that "HAVING BEEN" can be used if we are using it to explain the cause of the current action...

X caused Y...if i use the Having been part in the X then its correct this is what you wanted to convey?....If i am wrong please correct me...Thanks...
