China

by sumitkhurana » Sun Mar 08, 2009 7:24 pm
It has always been difficult to understand the basis of politics in the People's Republic of China. Because the system is effectively closed, it is impossible to know with any degree of confidence who is allied with whom and for what reasons. Yet Chinese politics does exhibit many of the external characteristics of factional political systems, as found in more open societies. It is legitimate to conclude, therefore, that China has a factional political system.

Which one of the following, if true, would confirm the author's conclusion that China has a factional political system?

  (A) All open political systems are factional political systems.

  (B) All factional political systems are closed political systems.

  (C) All closed political systems are factional political systems.

  (D) China's political system is more open than many existing factional political systems.

  (E) China's political system is more closed than all existing factional political systems.

IMO C. what's the OA?

Conclusion is that 'China has a factional political system'
Also it is said that 'China has a closed system'.
Hence 'All closed political systems should be factional political systems', only then China can have a factional political system.
Hence C

Political system is closed
and it shows signs of factional political system

Conclusion: Political system is factional

Anything that links closed sytem with factional sytem can support the conclusion.
Option B says the opposite while option C says it correctly.

i dnt agree with the OA.

I think A shud be the answer.

It is clearly stated tht

"...Yet Chinese politics does exhibit many of the external characteristics of factional political systems, as found in more open societies."

factional political systems are found in open societies.... and china tho it has closed system exhibits external characteristic of factional systems.... they have also used the word YET which shows doubt in wht is stated earlier(china being a closed system)

wht u can infer from this is tht all open political systems are factional..

WARNING:
this is NOT a gmat-like question.

this is the sort of problem that would appear on the LSAT (if indeed it would appear anywhere at all). practicing on these sorts of problems won't undo your existing learning, but it won't be as helpful as practicing on more gmat-targeted material.

--

the answer to this problem would be (c).

remember, you're looking for the answer choice that establishes, WITH ABSOLUTE CERTAINTY, that the political system is factional. (this is what the word "confirm" MUST mean on these sorts of problems).

the passage states that china's political system is closed.
choice (c) states that ALL closed systems are factional.
therefore, if china's system is closed, then it must be factional.
done.

none of the other answer choices GUARANTEE that china's system will be factional.
(a) is irrelevant because china's system isn't open.
(b) is irrelevant because it only applies to systems that we already know are factional.
(d) is irrelevant because it only addresses open vs. closed, not factional vs. non-factional.
(e) is irrelevant because it only addresses open vs. closed, not factional vs. non-factional.
