The earth’s resources are being

by navami » Thu Sep 08, 2011 11:56 am
The earth's resources are being depleted much too fast. To correct this, the United States must keep its resource consumption at present levels for many years to come.

1. The argument above depends on which of the following assumptions?
(A) Per capita resource consumption in the United States is at an all-time high.
(B) The United States wastes resources.
(C) The United States uses more resources than any other country.
(D) The United States imports most of the resources it uses.
(E) Curbing U.S. resource consumption will significantly retard world resource depletion
This time no looking back!!!

Although, the stem talks about Earth's resources depletion , the conclusion is about USA. To fix the gap we should find the assumption which explains this 'jump'.

The only possible underlining assumption to me is 'USA is consuming the major share of earth's resources'. So, curbing this consumption will surely help to slowdown world's resource depletion.

Option E fits the bill.

Yes I have doubt
Question is "The argument above depends on which of the following assumptions?"

IMO C (C) The United States uses more resources than any other country

and not the solution E which says (E) Curbing U.S. resource consumption will significantly retard world resource depletion

Let me know if my understanding is wrong ?

I also think C is right, Since US uses more resources than any other country so keeping it consumption constant for many years would decrease the depletion rate.

E. Curbing U.S. resource consumption will significantly retard world resource depletion -- is a too severe statement because of the use of "significantly retard"

i eliminated C because it is not mentioned anywhere in the passage the USA uses more or less resources than any other country.
although strong language is used in E but so is mentioned in the passage..'must'...
Plz let me know if i am wrong..
thnks

E is the answer, it provides the missing link between the evidence and the conclusion

The argument doesn't compare US's consumption with any other country's

The author assumes that if US reduces its consumption, the depletion of earth's resources will be curbed

Argument: curbing united states ====== result in decrease in the depletion rate.

Assumption: United states alone resource consumption is so high that controlling US resource consumption will reduce the depletion rate.
Hence,
(E) Curbing U.S. resource consumption will significantly retard world resource depletion

The premise talks mainly about Earth but the stem talks about US....To fill this gap

E is the best answer.....
Don't look for the incorrect things that you have done rather look for remedies....

The question states that "the United States must keep its resource consumption at present levels for many years to come". The US isn't *curbing* resource consumption if the level of consumption is staying the same... I would go with C...

What's the OA?
