preprtion for 6 weeks

by siddhu161 » Sun Nov 24, 2013 8:53 pm
Hi, I am planning to give GMT in December end - January start. already started preparation in month of October and also joined brief tuition for 4 weeks just to get clear idea and it's over. I had to take gap of almost 3 weeks due to some personal reasons so planning to start up again now n need your help.

Can anyone please tell me how to start with proper time table? I have almost 2-3 hrs daily with my job on weekdays to study but not clear how exactly to utilize these.
I have attempted GMT prep exam for GMTPrep md scored 620 in 1st attempt.
Material I have with me is as follows : OG 13, Manhattan SC guide. and number of problems n quizzes.

Please help me with this. Thanks lot.

Hi siddhu161,

If you could answer a few questions, then I'd be happy to offer some advice:

1) When did you take your last practice CAT? What were the Scaled Scores for the Quant and Verbal sections?
2) What is your score goal?
3) What schools are you planning to apply to? And when are you planning to apply?

Hi Siddhrth,

Since it's been almost 2 months since your last practice CAT, it would be a good idea for you to take another, so we can see what skills you've still retained and what needs a refresher. Will you have time in the next week to take another CAT?

Hi Rich,

I can attempt full fledged exam on weekend only. Can i attempt quant on one day and verbal on next? If its needed to be completed asap? Else i will attempt another complete mock test on coming Saturday and will update here. Currently i am randomly flipping OG 13 and attempting questions randomly.

let me know what can be done.

thanks,
Siddharth

Hi Siddarth,

I highly recommend that you take the ENTIRE CAT in one sitting, as this will give you a measure of your total performance (including how you respond when you start to feel tired). So practice up to this weekend and then take the full CAT.

Hi Rich,

I have attempted one mock test but except AWA.

Final score - 680
Quant - 44 (70%)
Verbal - 40 (89%)
IR - (disaster -2)

Please let me know your suggestions regarding the same.

Thanks & Regards,
Siddharth

Hi siddhu161,

This latest CAT clearly shows an improvement (especially in Verbal), but we can't completely trust it because you did NOT complete the entire Test in one sitting. Skipping ANY section, or doing anything else that is unrealistic (pausing the Test, listening to music while taking it, etc.) usually leads to an "inflated" score. At face value, we'll call this progress, but you still need to take an ENTIRE CAT under test-like conditions for us to know what your current ability level is.

Before taking that next CAT, some extra Quant practice is probably in order.

Hi Rich,

Thanks.
Just to clarify I haven't take any long break during these 3 sections.[usual 8 mins break between IR and Quant though]
I am planning to attempt another mock test today if possible and will update here.

Thanks,
Sid

Hi,

I am totally confused now. Yesterday I got 680 when I attempted mock up from 800score and today again back to 620 when I attempted one from manhatten. Can anyone help?

Thanks,
Sid

Hi Sid,

Here are some things to consider:

1) Were both Tests done in their ENTIRETY?
2) After reviewing this most recent CAT, how many questions did you get wrong due to silly mistakes?

The GMAT, as well as most practice CATs, are pretty good at giving you the score that you EARN. If you happen to earn a 680 on one CAT, that DOES NOT MEAN that you'll automatically score higher the next time.

Hi Rich,

In quant there were around 4 questions which wmt wrong due to silly mistakes.
And one more thing, I attempted Veritas free test 2 days back and scored 680 again. And all tests are done entirely. With breaks not more than 8 mins (as per actual conditions)

Thanks,
Sid

Hi Sid

In one of your prior posts, you stated that you skipped the AWA on your CAT. To clarify, did you complete the ENTIRE CAT (including AWA and IR) each time or not?

Hi Rich,

Yes. I completed AWA IR for last test (Veritas) but not one before that.

Thanks,
Sid

Hi Sid,

At this scoring level, the subtleties are everything. Skipping any sections during practice means that you didn't complete the entire exam and the end scoring result becomes unreliable as a way to measure your progress. The more silly mistakes that you make, the tougher it becomes to hit the highest score range.

Make sure that your future practice CATs are completed in their entirety and eliminate the silly mistakes. For you, those are the last of the "big" issues, everything else will be rare Quant and Verbal rules and subtleties.
