I just gave the GMAT yesterday and scored 710.

Profile: Female,Indian,27,Masters in Computer Science, working in the software field for the past 4 years, will have 5 years experience by the time I start school

I am a little disappointed with my score. I was doing really well on my practice tests. I took the GMATPREP tests 4 times (twice for each test) and scored 720,750,770 and 780. So, I was hoping to reach 730-740. However, my actual test was COMPLETELY different from ANY of the CATs I had ever taken. I am NOT making this up.Midway through the test, I literally stopped and said WTF out aloud. I thought to myself..IS this even GMAT?? You know how you sort of don't expect to see the exact same problem/SC/CR but at least a familiar pattern? Everything was so alien on my test. And I also ran out of time towards the end..Had to guess the last verbal SC. So, for such a bad test, I am moderately happy with 710, I almost canceled my score, but just the thought of having to wake up the next day studying for GMAT pushed me to click the Yes button, and honestly, I am glad I did. In my opinion, it is VERY hard to judge how your test has gone unless something major happens (feeling ill, running out of time majorly etc). So, just go ahead and view your score. Worst case scenario, you give it again. 90% of test takers give the GMAT twice. I took the GMAT last November and scored 640. I made a bad decision last time, pushed myself to rush and give the GMAT in the hopes of making it for the December deadline. This time around, my prep was a lot better. I spent more effort on giving practice CATs rather than "studying".

Often, people ask what to do differently from the first time around to the second. Here is my 2 cents:

Prep: I prepared for about 3 months. I had some personal crisis in between, so didn't study for about 2 weeks, but besides that, I pretty much studied everyday. During the week, I'd do "book" study such as OG and MGMAT, and during the weekend I'd give CATs and do homework. Give a lot of CATs. It helps to build endurance. I gave 2 every week - Saturday and Sunday. That was the first thing I did pretty much every weekend after waking up. Then, at night, I'd go over my test and see where I went wrong. Also, read forums and others posts. It really helps to know that others are going through the same thing and have the same questions and doubts that you do. I love this forum. In addition, what helped me was keeping a calendar and marking things I did each day. It helped me stay on track and have a plan. Maybe that just worked for me coz I'm a little OCD, but I think its a good idea to see what you're doing and what you have left.

Materials used: OG 12th edition, OG Math and Verbal supplements, MGMAT all 8 books. Don't even bother with anything else (Princeton, Kaplan..etc). I bought Kaplan and Princeton and never ended up using them this time around. I honestly believe OG and MGMAT is more than enough. Infact, even in the MGMAT series, I found the RC and CR pretty useless.

Course: I signed up for Knewton. I just wanted some discipline and motivation, because I was lacking both when I started my second prep. In all honesty, I think self-prep is sufficient, but taking a course kinda pushes you to work harder. Knewton was awesome, very convenient since its all online and tons of practice material and great instructors. Definitely recommend (I have a detailed review of Knewton under the course review section).

Besides what I mentioned above, I used BTG practice questions. They were pretty good. I did the entire OG twice. I honestly think its better to do OG twice than waste time with any other material.

Also, make sure you take some time to relax everyday. I watched TV, hung out with friends at happy hour, spent time with my boyfriend, went for movies regularly. You need to chill, otherwise you will burn out. What I cut back on was major drinking on the weekend. That is a definite no-no in my opinion, coz you will lose out on an entire weekend. I did that a couple times during my prep and I regretted it. Also, I know other people have said that they worked out regularly, but I completely stopped doing that. Somehow, I couldn't manage with a full time, fairly demanding job. If I'd wake up early to go work out, I'd end up passing out early at night. But, if you can manage, go for it.

So that's my review. I contemplated (still kind of in 2 minds) giving it again, but I don't think its worth it. I was nervous on the day of my test and chances are I will be nervous again, so what are the odds that I will improve dramatically? I don't think a difference of 10-20 points will make a huge difference in the schools I can get into. If I write killer essays and have strong recommendations, I think I have a decent shot of getting in to good schools. I would love to hear thoughts on this.

Also, happy to answer any questions you guys might have.

GMAT Score:710

by bblast » Tue Jun 21, 2011 10:49 am
congrats, 710 is a good score, agree with you there are always days when u might end up getting a couple questions in ur domain and score 10-20 points extra, but u need not worry, u've beaten the GMAT and would pretty much qualify with this score in most schools. 640 to 710 is a good achievment. you can go and get drunk tonight for all the weekends due since three months. :)

I dnt agree with the work out part, an evening workout post work actually helps me stay awake, studying and eating good stuff till 2 am :P. If u are not used to working out then it does make u dizzy. If u are irregular at gym, dnt read debriefs and get too inspired to gym till ur done with ur GMAT !!!
Cheers !!

Thanks, Frankenstein. Feel free to ask me questions any time.

bblast: Yes, I agree with you. If something works for you, definitely do it. I didn't manage well with gym+work+studying. I used to work out regularly prior to GMAT, but stopped for 3 months. I ate healthfully and slept well, which kept my energy up. And yeah, I'm going away for the weekend to make up for all the drinking & fun I missed out for 3 months :-)

I used Manhattan GMAT Sentence Correction, which is extremely thorough. In addition, I used Official Guide 12th edition and OG verbal Supplement. I think these 3 are more than enough to give you complete coverage of SC.

Experts,

Can you please give me some insight about my GMAT score and whether I should contemplate giving again?

Thanks!

Same here. Got the same 710 today. And with a test experience very similar to yours.

Anyways, I believe that you have a good number of years in terms of work-experience. You will definitely be able to translate this score into a very good admit.

All the best to you for the application process.

Regards.

HI ...

I am not sure whether I should be writing this post...Aim- to confuse you more "not"...:)..But i am in a similar situation here..I mean I too am contemplating taking the GMAT again. This is probably the first time I am writing on this forum. I wanted to (like others who scored really well on the GMAT)write this kick ass debrief on my GMAT experience. But i was just not satisfied with my score...I took the test for the first time in June(last month that is) and got a 720(49Q 40V)..Ya the math screwed my happiness..So much for being called the quant stud and what not!!!....Now after reading this forum and whole lotta others I got this feeling that taking it again is a bad idea.. Like you,I got scores around 740's 750's and770's in almost all the mocks I took..So this 720 is just not setting in it seems..Plus I graduated in 2009 and am aiming for fall 2012..So I' ll have just 3 yrs of work ex at the time of joining school..I have spoken to a lot of people..All of them have congratulated me on the score...And have asked me to think twice before retaking it..

Now heres what I am gonna do...I am gonna listen to that "ring" inside my head that has been nagging me ever since I saw the 720 on the screen..telling me to believe in what i think I am worth and I am gonna shut it for good by taking the damn test again...Coz you know what ,,,some people have twisted heads..I am one of them..I need to know in my head that the score I am applying with is good enough for the schools I am targeting..You know that feeling of immense happiness..When you are jumping like a mad hog..shouting F F F F F..out loud without caring one bit...The 720 did not deliver that kinda hysterics you see :P..So I am gonna hunt that feeling down.. .
On one hand(Heavens forbid)..If I end up scoring below 720,the adcoms may not like it or they might just look at me as someone who is running after some magic number..Well again in my head I know that I am clearly not that guy...I know it for a fact..And will stand by it no mater what...Instead ,I am someone who is just not satisfied with what he got after putting in a reasonable amount of effort..Someone who knows he can do better..Someone who thinks he has sufficient time on his hand to take another shot..and also someone who wants to save himself from a life long regret...On the other hand the adcoms may look at me as someone who had the metal to listen to that "ring"..
I firmly believe that people who decide to write their B school apps themselves should be thorough with their personalities, motives and finances:P ,before weaving those magical stories we all call essays....As they say You gotta win it in your head first and then win it out there...So yes I want a better score and am willing to take a risk..I haven't taken Many in the life I have lived..So big deal !!!How will the adcoms look at it..Time will tell :0)!..Going out for dinner .Lemme know your say on this big butt post..was it helpful or did it cause neurosis????.

You are in the range required for most top Bschools:
https://www.crackverbal.com/wp-content/u ... scores.bmp

I would worry about the application if I were you. Unless ofcourse you think on anyother day you would have got a 750+. It is unlikely you have the motivation to study for the test again - so why bother :)

Hi rahul_gaur,

Your post did not cause any neurosis :-). I've actually made peace with my score. As Arun pointed out, I think the rest of the application is what will make more of a difference than a small increase in GMAT score. However, if you are confident that you can improve your GMAT score drastically, then go for it. I was not certain that I would score significantly more if I gave GMAT again. In fact, like you pointed out, I was nervous about scoring lesser than before. So, I decided to quit thinking about the GMAT and focus on the rest of the application.

I totally understand about wanting to get a score that will unequivocally leave you ecstatic. I was hoping I would get a score like that and just be purely happy instead of having "mixed feelings". But oh well. Mock tests don't compare to the actual tests. There is really no way to predict what can happen next time. I guess, you need to know when to hold em, know when to fold em, know when to walk away and know when to run! I decided to walk away.

In my opinion, so should you. GMAT is only one small part of the entire application. Typically, if you break 700 you are competitive. Put together a stellar application and I'm sure you will have a decent shot at good schools. This is my 2 cents.

However, if you are going to regret it, then out your doubts to rest and give it again. Schools typically consider the higher of the 2 scores, although you may have to explain why you got a lwoer score the second time around(if you do).

Good luck!

@ Arun-..I am not sure this whether this list that you have put up is a global avg or a demographic one. Coz for us indians/asians this mean is around the 740 mark for these schools(as far as my knowledge goes...)

@chaosgirl...Thanks for the good wishes..At least my point got across :).You see ,unlike you, I dont have the workex to back my app..So i am gonna have to take it again any which way.A better score may not compensate for my lack of work ex but it might just put me ahead of someone who has a similar profile..Anyway i wish you all the best for your apps...You applying in round 1?
