Can I? Should I? How?

by uhsa » Mon Jul 26, 2010 11:34 am
First let me begin in the conventional manner, viz, introducing myself. I am UHSA, 36 yrs old. I have an undergrad degree from DeVry University, have 5 subjects remaining to finish my MS.

To be on a slightly different tangent, I have always wanted to do an MBA, however, historically speaking, I have been a bit lazy, and hence, an under-achiever. (While I do not claim to be a genius, I know that because I have never really put my best foot forward, I haven't really exploited my full potentials. ) So, to go on, I can't afford doing MS, and so decided to avail the benefit from the employers. However, I was told by them that since I am a computer (Network/Firewall admin) guy, they would only pay for my education if it's something pertaining to the work. Hence, I started my MS in Computers. With only 5 more subjects to go, it hit me: Why spend more time and energy in something that eventually I do not like? I have always wanted to do an MBA, so why not cut the losses, and do what I should do.

If I am going to do my MBA, I think I should do it from a Tier 1 school. I know, I might be aiming for the sky, but then, where's the fun otherwise? Right?

Herein lies my question:
Coming from a school like DeVry, can I get into the Whartons/Northwestern/Chicago Booth??

As I said, historically, I have been someone who has been reading for half a day, getting my B+, A, scores. I have been blessed with a not so bad brain, but never took it upon me to work for it. Now, when the age is passing, it dawned on me to give it my best shot.

So, not only am I coming out of a school like DeVry (and what I mean by it is it's NOT an Ivy), but my scores there have been Bs and As. I do NOT have a 4.0, although IIRC, it's a 3.7 or 3.8.
Would that go against me?

Lastly, I read quite a few articles here on BTG, that I am a bit confused about how to approach it. Any way someone can guide me on the right way to go about this, and the resources?

I will definitely shoot out more questions once I get more into this. But this time, I want to give my best, which has been the major fear factor for me. What if I can't do it? That is so much worrying than before, when I used to read for a few hours and get the grades. If I didn't get it, I knew I deserved the poor grades. But this has been my life-long dream, and I can't afford to lose. I need all the help I can. Please help...

From what I've heard from people it's never a bad idea to just ask the schools for their opinions if you can get to a few of their presentations nearby or to a campus visit. Tier 1 is tough but if you have unique background they may encourage you to apply or at least tell you about your chances. Have you talked to any admissions reps?[/list]

Yes I have. I was told that they take "everything" in account, not just one part; so basically they didn't say no but they didn't say anything else.
