Question : Many Americans cities have been unsuccessful in their efforts to move mental patients out of mammoth asylums and that treat them in their local communities

a. to move mental patients out of mammoth asylums and treat
b. to move mental patients out of mammoth asylums for treating

Here, I think b is perfect choice as I dont feel that move and treat are two different works.

Kindly suggest where I am wrong.

The problem here is parallelism which is solved in option A
to move patients from X and (to) treat them in Y.

Hi Kartik,

But dont u think they both are not independent things?

They want to move patients for treating ONLY? to show this we dont need "and"

Please explain briefly.

Hi,

We must be careful to avoid answer choices that change the meaning of the sentence. Option B tells us that patients are being moved so that they can be treated in local communities. In order to preserve the meaning of the original sentence, it would be best to choose A over B.

Hi Katik,

Yeah this what I believe is the correct logical meaning.

Why they want to move mental patients out of asylums? for treating them in the local communities. So it is more meaningful than A.

Not necessarily. The sentence does not tell us that the patients were moved so that they could be treated in local communities. The sentence simply says that American cities are unsuccessful at two things: (1) moving patients out of large asylums, and (2) treating them in local communities.
