I'm for (C).

Using Unlike would mean we're trying to say ethno historians are different than ethnographers. Where as, IMHO, we're trying to establish a similarity to begin with, and then add on to it by saying "but they also..." to add to what they did more than ethnographers.

Thoughts?

D for me

B, C - changes original meaning of the sentecne
E - changes meaning
A - instead of contrast conjuctor 'but' additive conjuctor 'and' is required

I too go with D.

With 'like' and 'but ' is contradictory and moreover 'they ' in that case is ambiguous in reference .

With 'Unlike' and 'and' they clearly refers to the second noun.

Ans should be E and the simple reason is because "They" is ambiguous is all the other options.

I don't think 'they' is ambigous here.It clearly refers to ethno historians.

IMHO C. It's the only option that gives a meaning to the setence. I could also be E, but it lacks 'they'.

I see why "they" could be ambiguous, but as I said earlier too, I feel using "Unlike" changes the meaning.

We're trying to establish a similarity and then show the difference. So starting with Like is reqd.

Experts?

Guys my 2 cents....

Unlike implies opposite…so unlike and but don’t go well

So unlike without but will be good
Also implies in addition to making observations they do something else also..

Like shows similarity and exceptipn can be put with a but clause…
(both are similar but ….)

A : Unlike but eliminate combo
B: Like …and they also …no contrast….so also is not needed
E: Unlike but : eliminated
D: Unlike …they do a and b ….(they do a and also b – not required)

C is good ……it shows similarity with an but exception.

And why should 'Like' be followed by an exception only.I think "Like X,Y does....., and also " isn't incorrect.

sulabh didnt meant to say that Like should be followed with an exception but here .....it you have a sentence where u havs following options

LiKE A, B DOES SOMETHING AND ALSO .......
LIKE A, B DOES SOMETHING , BUT ALSO DOES SOMETHING MORE.....

now i feel BUT and also implies something additional ...

However also is not required in first sentence it is redundant....

Sorry not english is not my forte :) but just trying to explain :P
