The sentence you mentioned is obviously correct. However, I think, there is a subtle difference in MEANING in the SC at hand (re option E) and your sentence. (Let's see what experts have to say!)

@Verbal Experts - could you please let me know whether the following is an ERROR in option E:

"...Elvis Presley and Jerry Garcia, whose music was significantly different from THAT of HIS own" -- is this construction in RED GRAMMATICALLY viable on GMAT ? Isn't it REDUNDANT ?

This is obviously incorrect, because of "double possessive":

...Elvis Presley and Jerry Garcia, whose music was significantly different from THAT (music) of HIS own (music).

So, this sentence seems to be saying that "music" has "music".

So, it can be:

...Elvis Presley and Jerry Garcia, whose music was significantly different from of HIS own

Or we can say:

...Elvis Presley and Jerry Garcia, whose music was significantly different from THAT of the artist.

bonetlobo - I also agree with you! In fact, I had the same thought in mind...

But curious, why experts are yet to chime in ? (is it too silly a qs to ask ? )
