Biologists believe that they have found one of the substances that tell individual genes both when to become active and when to remain quiescent in the earliest phases of an embryo's development.

(A) tell individual genes both when to become active and when to remain
(B) tell individual genes both at which time they should become active and should remain
(C) tells individual genes both when to become active and when to remain
(D) tells individual genes both when to activate and when to
(E) tell an individual gene both about when it should become active and when it should remain
I came up with this same question while solving Brutal bangus SC Notes.but the Option E is different .
Lets look at this again. The OA stands as
A
"tell" is correct>C,D out.
B>incorrect.

E still isn't parallel.

The parallelism marker is "both X and Y"

So X and Y need to be parallel, and I should be able to write two sentences, one that finishes with X only and one that finishes with Y only.

Here's what we get:

X: Biologists believe that they have found one of the substances that tell an individual gene about when it should become active

Y: Biologists believe that they have found one of the substances that tell an individual gene when it should remain

On a more important note, the fact that this problem is floating around with multiple different answers means that random people are re-writing parts of this problem and publishing them.

That's not a good way to study.
