Two questions for this one:

1) Isn't "they" ambiguous at best? Although I think it refers to "researchers." "They" was already used for researchers once

2) Let's say the first "they" was never used for "researchers." Would you still be able to use "they" for plastics? I would imagine if you want to do so, you still have to put "that" infront of "they" so you have two parallel items talking about the plastic: that X and that Y.

Here the subject is "rate of dis-integration" not "plastics"

than it originally seemed is correct

In E it and they both are trying to point to rate of disintegarion. It is not a meaningful construction.

First take: 640 (50M, 27V) - RC needs 300% improvement

yup "they" is refering to the "plastics" and "plastics" is the subject
