Q)16. Balzac drank more than fifty cups of coffee a day and died of caffeine poisoning; furthermore, caffeine did not seem to bother Samuel Johnson, the great writer and lexicographer, who was reported to have drunk twenty-five cups of tea at one sitting.

Correct Option:- however, caffeine did not seem to bother

can anybody explain?

Look at the parallelism between Balzac drank.... and ... did not bother. Both in the past tense as you are talking about a moment in time. It gets confusing with the 'have drunk' at the end of the sentence, but this modifier that is talking about events over a period of time - thus you would use the past perfect as was done.
