A certain smelting plant operates 24 hours per day, with three shifts of 200 workers per shift. Due to a flu epidemic, of the workers on the first shift, 10 percent of the workers on the second shift, and 100 of the workers on the third shift are unable to work on a given day. If each worker and each shift has the same productivity, what is the approximate percent decrease in productivity due to the flu epidemic?

If u realise u never quoted 1/4 in ur original question..
Okai thats fine ..be careful the next time...

here goes the solution ..Its E.

total employess 3*200 = 600

total productivity = 600*24( 24 hrs in a day) = 14400

number of employees sick in first shift
1/4*200 = 50

second shift 10% = 0.1*200 = 20

third shift =100

thus .. total number of employess sick = 50+20+100 = 170

loss of productivity = (170*24)/14400 = 28.33 % henve E.

hope it helps..do let us know if u have any doubts..

PS: u can also consider dividing 170/600 = 28% as we know that the productivity is same for all employee.. i just used a more formal approach so that its easier for you to understand the concept.

Your screen print and what you posted in your original post have different figures which are relevant for the questions. Try to check your question.

Yes, thanx!
We can solve it with out multiplying on 24, making the productivity of each employee equal to 1.

So, before the epidemic there were 200*3=600 employees.
After epidemic: (200-25%*200)+(200-10%*200)+(200-100)=430
(600-430)/600=170/600=0,28333 approx 28%
