Attending top school, reapplying to HBS?

by rt20 » Fri Sep 23, 2011 9:03 am
I've just started my MBA in one of the top-5 schools in the country (Booth, Kellogg or Wharton). However, my dream was/is Harvard, from which I got dinged last year after interview in R1. At that time, my gmat was <700, but in R2 I improved it to 750, and had significant professional achievements. In R2 I was accepted to several top schools and decided to enroll one of them.

However to be honest some times I have thoughts about reapplying again to HBS in R1 for Class'14, and if admitted, to drop my current school. Dunno why but I feel like I'd be admitted this time and should try.

What do you guys think? Please some help/comments would be appreciated. I really need help at this moment. Thanks a lot.

would not make any sense to drop out of your school (The school would hate you for that) and TRY for HBS. I'm surprised that n oone else has commented thus far but I think that you would do yourself a disservice. That would reflect poorly on you as well. I'm just imagining if next year one of my classmates didn't come back and then I find out he/she has enrolled at another school the following year.
My goal is to make MBA applicants take onus over their process.

I want to drop off MBA at my school too. The MBA program at my school is not top-tier program. There is nothing wrong with my class, I like my classmate, but I want to strike bigger name.

Could you explain why it reflects poorly if I am looking for an MBA program? thank a lot.

Hi Minchau and RT20,

Leaving your current MBA to try and get into Harvard or some other "dream" school is a BAD IDEA. It has the potential to make you look like you lack integrity, as you accepted your place at your school, a place which in theory could have gone to someone else. Rather than thinking that the grass will be greener elsewhere, work to make the best of your experience at your current school. Transferring schools is far more common in undergrad. Once you are in professional school, you are expected to be a decisive adult who knows what s/he wants. It doesn't mean that you have a perfect plan or career vision, but it does mean that you know how to make the best of less-than-perfect situations. Believe it or not, even people at Harvard have buyer's remorse at times, but they make the best of the experience and are usually satisfied with their decision in the end. Why? Because they leave school with lifelong friends and an excellent education. Neither of you said that you don't like your classmates or that you feel you aren't getting a great education, so it sounds like you just need an adjustment in attitude.

Good luck!
