illegal drugs by high school seniors

by uptowngirl92 » Tue Jun 09, 2009 5:02 am
An annually conducted, nationwide survey shows a continuing marked decline in the use of illegal drugs by high school seniors over the last three years.

Q1 Which of the following, if true, casts most doubt on the relevance of the survey results described above for drawing conclusions about illegal drug use in the teen-age population as a whole?

(A) Because of cuts in funding, no survey of illegal drug use by high school seniors will be conducted next year.
(B) The decline uncovered in the survey has occurred despite the decreasing cost of illegal drugs.
(C) Illegal drug use by teen-agers is highest in those areas of the country where teen-agers are least likely to stay in high school for their senior year.
(D) Survey participants are more likely now than
they were three years ago to describe as "heroic" people who were addicted to illegal drugs and have been able to quit.
(E) The proportion of high school seniors who say that they strongly disapprove of illegal drug use has declined over the last three years.

Q2.. Which of the following, if true, would provide most support for concluding from the survey results described above that the use of illegal drugs by people below the age of 20 is declining?

(A) Changes in the level of drug use by high schoolseniors are seldom matched by changes in the level of drug use by other people below the
age of 20.
(B) In the past, high school seniors were consistently the population group most likely to use illegal drugs and most likely to use them heavily.
(C) The percentage of high school seniors who use illegal drugs is consistently very similar to the percentage of all people below the age of 20 who use illegal drugs.
(D) The decline revealed by the surveys is the result of drug education programs specifically targeted at those below the age of 20.
(E) The number of those surveyed who admit to having sold illegal drugs has declined even faster than has the number who have used drugs.

D and C

For the first one I was caught between C and D but I went for D because even if those areas of country where teenagers are least likely to stay in senior high has the highest drug use there is no way of knowing that those areas of the country are everywhere. There could be just one or two areas like that or there could be many. If many areas of country are like that then it weakens or casts doubt. So D came in as the winner because it directly targets the subjects i.e. the participants. It says these participants were drug users at one time and are now drug free. So the survey only talked to participants who successfully quit. How about those who are still shooting up?

Second one was C and pretty straightforward

OA please??
200 or 800. It don't matter no more.

@Yogami

For Q1, I feel its C.

D) dont see any mention of teenage population in the survey. The survey might just be among high school students.

Query: Qs 1 C or D

by turbo jet » Tue Jun 09, 2009 11:01 pm
On second thoughts my answer would be C for Qs 1

My Thought Process:

Survey- Premise/ Evidence
Decline in illegal drug use by high school senior- Conclusion

For weakening, there are 2 ways that we can weaken:
a. try to negate/ undermine the premise (the survey) or;
b. provide another cause for the conclusion (Decline in illegal drug use by high school senior)

Choice C provides (b) method

However D is not very clear, some of its
words are out of scope and provides us no reason on how the survey population
can undermine the survey. Hence to be eliminated.

Also when we ask the question: Does the survey accurately represents the views of the whole group surveyed? There is no definite answer. Hence we cannot use it for weakening. This answer choice is thus out of scope /neutral.

Can anyone throw more light on any more reasons that might help in choosing bw Chice C and D?

Also OA please.
Thnx
Cheers!!!

I agree.

One way to weaken is to show there's a problem or bias in the data under consideration used to make the argument.

(C) does that weakening act.

The answer for 1 question is D

C - talks about the areas of the country, where as the argument is about nationwide survey

D- attacks the participants of the survey and cast doubt if the participants were representative. Hence D is correct

IMO C and C.
2nd question is pretty straight forward.

explanation for 1st
choice is between C and D.
drug use by high school seniors is declining. we need to cast a doubt on the conclusion "about" drug use in teenagers. we don't know whether the conclusion is that the drug use in teenagers is declining or inclining.

C) Illegal drug use by teen-agers is highest in those areas of the country where teen-agers are least likely to stay in high school for their senior year.
so there are teenagers outside the school. we don't know how many and we need another survey to find out how many teenagers are NOT attending school. so this is the reason why we cannot decide whether drug use in teenagers is increasing or decreasing

(D) Survey participants are more likely now than
they were three years ago to describe as "heroic" people who were addicted to illegal drugs and have been able to quit.--- this actually supports the conclusion. participants think it "heroic" to quit so it is likely that teenagers quit.

Thnx a ton tohellandback for your explanation.

C as per your explanation definitely weakens the conclusion because the results of the survey talks about high school student teens only. And is therefore not representative of the conclusion about all teenagers. There is a structural flaw here.

However, I still cannot understand why D may be wrong. Bec D tells us that that the survey result is based on survey conducted on biased participants. This also does weakens the fact that conclusion cannot be drawn.

After all a survey with biased participants will not give a proper conclusion. I guess I am reading too much. Maybe this choice gets eliminated bec it is neutral.

Still confused on why No D. (Though i understand C is definitely better than D)

Please correct me if i am wrong
Thx a ton

turbo jet,
mind you, the conclusion is NOT that teenager drug use is declining. question says we can draw conclusion ABOUT teenage drug use. and from the given option we need to find the one that says "NO, you CAN"T draw any conclusions based on that"

now C you understand already.
D actually says "yes you CAN draw conclusion". because survey participants used to think it was not "heroic" but now they think it is heroic.so we can make a conclusion that teenagers who used to do drugs quit doing so because it is "heroic"

that said, I just think that D is too vague and doesn't give is any specific information.
