i've read this question somewhere... Powerscore CR Bible, if i'm not mistaken. However, this is a toughie and since I don't recollect the answer, I cannot say for sure that i've arrived at the correct answer. Here's how i went about it:

question: assumption required by historian i.e. assumption required to say that they both discovered calculus independently

a) leibniz didn't tell anyone - so what if he told some1, doesnt mean they both didnt discover independtly. Eliminated!

b) no 3rd person discovered independently - so what if some1 else discovered independently. That does prove/disprove that these two also discovered independently. Eliminated!

c) newton believing that liebniz learned something.. yatata. If anything, this goes against conclusion. Eliminated!

d) even though one may know that they other had developed calculus, that doesn't mean they got the details. So, they could have still discovered independently. Eliminated!

e) hmm.. if they had learnt crucial details from some other source, maybe they didnt discover it at all. I'm not convinced by this choice, but this is a lot better than the other choices.

My answer would have to be E

hard to say... it's depends on how you look at the question. I was stuck for almost two minutes, trying to figure out a line of attack. But then, it suddenly clicked. It ended up being pretty straightforward. I'm guessing it would be in the 600-700 level.
