This April, three out of seven people will file tax returns with a disc found in software stores and accounting texts.

A) tax returns with a disk found in software stores and accounting texts
B) a tax return with a disk found in software stores and accounting texts
C) tax returns with disks found in a software store and an accounting text
D) tax returns with a disk found in a software store and an accounting text
E) a tax return with a disk found in a software store and an accounting text

Completely bamboozled !! :shock:

IMO Answer: A

needed..."tax returns...software stores...accounting texts..."

IMO "A".

A) tax returns with a disk found in software stores and accounting texts
Correct.

B) a tax return with a disk found in software stores and accounting texts
Since there are more then one people...so it cannot be "a tax return"...it has to be "tax returns"

C) tax returns with disks found in a software store and an accounting text
It says disk is found in only one store...and original sentence said multiple stores have the availability.
Moreover there can be only one disk that can be used for filing returns....its copies might be available from multiple sources...so using "disks" is wrong here.

D) tax returns with a disk found in a software store and an accounting text
It says disk is found in only one store...and original sentence said multiple stores have the availability.

E) a tax return with a disk found in a software store and an accounting text
Since there are more then one people...so it cannot be "a tax return"...it has to be "tax returns"

Can someone please tell which one is correct(between houses and house) and why ?

Three percent of country population own houses.
Three percent of country population own a house.

Looks like the option "A" and "B" in the above question have only this difference.....

Moreover IMO "B" changes the meaning of sentence....please correct me if I am wrong here.

it says that there is only return that will be filed....but the original sentence says that returns may be filled....there may be multiple type of returns...e.g. Income tax returns, property tax returns etc. etc...

I am even unable to comprehend what the sentence is trying to say, let alone answer the question. :( OE says there is subject-verb agreement error in A. How?

I am not sure about the error part but what sentence want to say is this:

There is some disk which
1. is found in P and Q.
2. and is used to file some returns....

Most likely this disk must be containning some software which will be installed in a computer...and with the help of that software tax returns will be filed...

A and B are close only difference being in number. choice between "tax returns" and "a tax return" involves subj-verb agreement.

Hey Guys, Just bumped into the explanation for this..here it goes..

It says "There is an error in meaning in this sentence that comes from the fact that 'tax returns' is plural and 'a disk is singular'. It makes is sound like all of the people used the same disk. A is out. Choices C, D and E are all wrong because they do not correct the error in meaning and because they change the meaning of the original sentence and violates the directions. By substituting 'AN accounting text' for 'accounting texts' changes meaning. Now it is one singular text that is being used and not a variety as the original sentence states"

That makes sense... however, it would still be good to try and find an explanation as to why tax return here is supposed to be singular as opposed to plural.
Have you wondered how you could have found such a treasure? -T

The reason for kicking out A in above is "It makes is sound like all of the people used the same disk"...

Can someone please explain how the same is solved in option B. I am totally puzzled by the question and its explanation :-(

Experts please tell why "B" is better than A...

There is one similar question in OG-10, Q252, where it says "Three out of every four automobile owners in the United States also own a bicycle."....

But there the original sentence itself contained bicycle...so using "bicycle" instead of "bicycles" looks logical....

But in the above question, the original sentence contains "returns".

Can someone please tell....do in these of scenarios does GMAT always like to have singular ?
