As rainfall began to decrease

by yashvardhan90 » Sat Jul 18, 2015 11:54 am
As rainfall began to decrease in the Southwest about the middle of the twelfth century, most of the
Monument Valley Anasazi abandoned their homes to join other clans whose access to water was less limited.

(A) whose access to water was less limited
(B) where there was access to water that was less limited
(0 where they had less limited water access
(D) with less limitations on water access
(E) having less limitations to water access

Option B and C are wrong because where can't refer to clans

Please explain other options

D and E tells you that they left with/having less access to water, which is illogical. A is the best answer.

On the GMAT, where must serve to refer to a PHYSICAL PLACE.
In B and C, where seems to refer to clans, which do not constitute a physical place.
Eliminate B and C.

In D and E, less incorrectly serves to modify the plural noun limitations.
To modify a plural noun, we use not less but FEWER.
Eliminate D and E.

The correct answer is A.

Hi GMATGuruNY,
Apart from what you've already mentioned above, I think following could be another potential (SYNTACTICAL) ERROR in C,D & E :

WATER ACCESS seems to be AWKWARD -- the correct usage should be ACCESS to WATER!

Thoughts ?

While access to water seems preferable to water access, awkwardness on its own is not a compelling reason to eliminate an answer choice.
Look for more compelling reasons -- reasons that cannot be debated.
