I think Opt F would be Correctchendawg wrote:Edit - Misread your option F. I think it'd be incorrect because it's talking about generations in general and not the actors.atulmangal wrote:if including is modifying only "actors", then what about this Op F, is this gonna be correct???
Op F) Stella Adler was one of the most influential artists in the American theater, training several generations of actors including Marlon Brando and Robert de Niro.
Thanks a lot
Atul
The reason option B is incorrect (in addition to the tense error-include is present tense and trained is past) is because of the word "who" before include. Because who must modify "actors", the sentence doesn't make sense. The sentence would mean that Stella Adler trained several generations of actors that literally "owned" Marlon Brando and Robert De Niro.

Hi GMATGuruNY,GMATGuruNY wrote:Look for easy reasons to eliminate answers. As an Actress and, more importantly, as a teacher of acting, Stella Adler was one of the most influential artists in the American theater, who trained several generations of actors including Marlon Brando and Robert Deniro.
a.Stella Adler was one of the most influential artists in the American theater, who trained several generations of actors including
b. Stella Adler, one of the most influential artists in the American theater, trained several generations of actors who include
c. Stella Adler was one of the most influential artists in the American theater, training several generations of actors, whose ranks included
d. One of the most influential artist in the American theater was Stella Adler, who trained several generations of actors including
e. One of the most influential artist in the American theater, Stella Adler, trained several generations of actors whose ranks included
In B, include should not be in the present tense, given that the main verb trained is in the past tense. All the verbs should be in the same tense unless a change in tense is necessary. Eliminate B.
The correct answer is C.
Few quick questions on this: actors who include and actors, whose ranks included -- is there any PRIME differences between these two phrases EXCEPT the Tense aspect ?
Isn't the second PHRASE less direct than the first one ?
Is this usage common and conventional on GMAT ?

A generation = approximately 30 years -- the time it takes a group of people to grow up and bear children.RBBmba@2014 wrote:Hi GMATGuruNY,

Implication:
Approximately 30 years pass between one generation of people and the next.
B, rephrased in the past:
several generations of actors who included Marlon Brando
Conveyed meaning:
At some point, ACTORS taught by Stella Adler INCLUDED MARLON BRANDO.
Thirty years later, DIFFERENT ACTORS taught by Stella Adler INCLUDED MARLON BRANDO.
Another thirty years later, an entirely NEW GROUP of actors taught by Stella Adler INCLUDED MARLON BRANDO.
This meaning implies that Marlon Brando was INCLUDED over the course of 90 YEARS.
Not the intended meaning.
In the OA, ranks = members of EVERY RANKING.
In other words, the entire LIST of members.
Thus, the OA conveys the following meaning:
The LIST of actors taught by Stella Adler includes Marlon Brando.
This meaning is sensical.

Not able to understand the part in RED.GMATGuruNY wrote:B, rephrased in the past:

Conveyed meaning:
At least three groups born around the same time INCLUDED MARLON BRANDO.
Not the intended meaning.
At least three groups [OF ACTORS] born around the same time INCLUDED MARLON BRANDO -- How this is wrong here and how EXACTLY this phrase is DIFFERENT from the phrase in C i.e. several generations of actors, whose ranks included ?
Please help!

That's GREAT Mitch. Much thanks!
Just couple of quick questions -
1. If B were several generations of actors including Marlon Brando, then I guess this particular phrase would make sense. Thoughts ?

This wording is not viable.RBBmba@2014 wrote:That's GREAT Mitch. Much thanks!

The phrase in red implies that the ACTORS themselves were INCLUDING Marlon Brando.
Not so.
The ACTORS did not select Marlon Brando to participate in Stella Adler's class.
Please do not attempt to correct wrong answer choices.
The goal here is to identify WHY incorrect answer choices are wrong, not to fix them.
In many cases, an incorrect answer choice cannot be easily fixed.

A. Same as above
B. Stella Adler, one of the most influential artists in the American theater, trained several generations of actors who include
C. Stella Adler was one of the most influential artists in the American theater, training several generations of actors whose ranks included
D. one of the most influential artists in the American theater was Stella Adler, who trained several generations of actors including
E. one of the most influential artists in the American theater, Stella Adler, trained several generations of actors whose ranks included
I didnt really get two things here -
1. who trained several generations of actors including - Why isnt including modifying "actors"? (After including we have name of actors)
2. training several generations of actors whose ranks included - how are ranks described by actors names??
Thanks!
Excuse me!Sir! Could you explain the use of comma+training in choice C? Is there any logical relationship to use comma+doing? Thanks in advance!GMATGuruNY wrote:Look for easy reasons to eliminate answers. As an Actress and, more importantly, as a teacher of acting, Stella Adler was one of the most influential artists in the American theater, who trained several generations of actors including Marlon Brando and Robert Deniro.

In D and E, as an actress and as a teacher are incorrectly modifying one. Eliminate D and E.
In A, who is incorrectly modifying artists. The intended meaning is that Stella Adler trained several generations of actors. Eliminate A.
In B, include should not be in the present tense, given that the main verb trained is in the past tense. All the verbs should be in the same tense unless a change in tense is necessary. Eliminate B.
The correct answer is C.
What is the reason to use ranks in the correct answer? Thanks!!
