Wood Harvesting Technique

by vinny_r78 » Sat Jul 10, 2010 3:38 am
The use of a wood harvesting technique known as clear cutting has had two especially insidious environmentsl impacts. The first is that it causes erosion, as hillsides that were covered with mature trees are abrubtly exposed to the full impact of the elements. The second is that when new trees grow in the area they are often nearly all of the same age and species, and therefore highly susceptible to disease and insect infestation.

from the passage above, it can be properly inferred that wood harvesting technique can continue with fewer negative impacts if which of the following techniques is employed.

A) Waiting longer periods between harvests so that the trees will be larger when cut.
B) Using selctive harvesting techniques that leave some mature trees standing.
C) Spraying areas that are clear cut with an insecticide to prevent infestation.
D) Leaving some areas uncut, such as those near state parks and along roadsides
E) Planting monocultures, a single species of fast growing tree, in areas that have been clear cut.

Can you please provide the answer and reasoning behind your answer?

I will provide OA after sometime.

IMO B.

Though B is not 100% satisfactory because it introduces other harvesting techniques, I will go with B as Other options do not seem close to me..

I too would go with B.

Only two things are stated i the argument.
1) erosion and 2) infestation due to smiliar age and species

based on these,
only B can be infered by saying that, if we have a blend of martued and young trees, infestation issue is resolved.

What is the OA?
