Unlike the body's inflammatory response to cuts and sprains, with widespread swelling and stiffness immobilizing the injured area until it heals, the body's response to sunburn is more localized and resulting in a distinct line dividing affected and unaffected areas of the skin.

My answer is D

resulting- wrong verb tense - eliminates A,C

E - instead [redundant use of Unlike, already being used for contrast]

B - which cannot modify body

IMO E.

A - localized and resulting - wrong; IT doesn't have proper antecedent
B - Parallelism error. Comparing response and sunburn
C - Same as B
D - IT doesn't have proper antecedent; IT HAS HEALED changes the meaning

You're right. But in D what does IT refer to?
Due to its placement, "IT" should refer to "the injured area."

I check grammar before meaning logic.

check grammar

"unlike" phrase and "with" phrase are modifier and so they can not stand side by side because they can not modify each other. A and C are out

"in which" and "where" refer to "cuts and sprains". this is ok. However, "unlike ...response" needs a noun which is comparable to "response". B is out because "response" is not comparable to "sunburn" logically.

"until healing" in E means that "swelling ans stiffness heal". This is not logic. Moreover, "instead" is redundant.

D is left

D has tons of issue, pick them as you want:

Unlike the body's inflammatory response to cuts and sprains, in which widespread swelling and stiffness immobilize the injured area until it has healed, the body’s more localized response to sunburn results in a distinct line dividing affected and unaffected areas of the skin.

As you can see: Intruder "it" is the biggest issue
healed and dividing are not parallel.

IMO the answer should be D.
"IT" in D is referring to injured area.

in A the pepositional phrase starting with "WITH" describes what?, "cuts and sprains" or the "response". I think we need "in which" here.
in E - "intsead" is redundant.

It refers to injured area.

the tense is incorrect in E..how can it be correct????????
