undergrad GPA issue

by daniyatom » Sun Jan 10, 2010 10:56 am
I have a concern about my undergrad GPA. I have a 3.5 from an engineering school, so from that point of view, I am okay. But, there may be issues if you look at my transcripts.

Basically, I did well on the school that granted my degree - 3.5 for 3 years of work (I transferred some credits so I was able to get a 4 year degree in 3 years at that school) with 2W (Withdrawal)s. The Ws are due to me trying to take more courses, and I think adcomm can figure that out by looking at the course load on my transcripts.

My transfer courses are a worry...got mostly Bs and Cs for 4 courses that I took community colleges. Also, I had like 3 Ws over 4 semesters at the foreign school - GPA there was 3.19.

Hindsight is 20-20 but back then I had money issues so I worked lot and I also knew that transfer credits won't count towards my final CGPA. So I focussed more on work, and neglected my classes because Cs will transfer and won't count towards my CGPA at the school that granted my degree.

I think right now I am little worried...I have applied to two schools already (with recent deadlines) - I am thinking of calling them and including a short explanation for my situation and hopefully they will include that in my file or should i not bother?

My GMAT is 730 with even quant and verbal breakdowns so I hope that will help offset any concerns. And I am 9 years out of school.

And I'll probably do an explanation for the schools that I have yet to apply to..or not?

Please advise.

Dear daniyatom,

While I can understand your concern, I think you are just experiencing what I see as the mild panic we all experience after we submit applications. You start to analyze what you submitted and second-guess everything you did. Honestly, I think you are probably fine and I would not send an explanation to the schools you have already submitted application to as it might draw attention to something that will otherwise receive minor attention. It is possible the admissions committee will look at your performance in 4 classes at a community college from over 10 years ago and wonder why you didn't perform at your capability based on your main transcript and GMAT score. However, those 4 courses are not significant in the overall scope of your application. Likewise, your experience in the foreign school is not enough to cause me a concern with essentially a 3.2 GPA.

With regards to the applications to be submitted, I think you can provide an explanation, but once again, I think you are just drawing attention to something that doesn't really warrant attention. Those courses were taken a long time ago and make up a very small percentage of your academic record. If I were you, I would just submit your transcripts and let it go--but that is just my perspective on it. You need to do what you feel is right.

Good luck,
Lisa
