Plants are more effi cient at acquiring carbon than are fungi, in the form of carbon dioxide, and converting it to energy-rich sugars.

(A) Plants are more effi cient at acquiring carbon than are fungi,

(B) Plants are more effi cient at acquiring carbon than fungi,

(C) Plants are more effi cient than fungi at acquiring carbon,

(D) Plants, more effi cient than fungi at acquiring carbon,

(E) Plants acquire carbon more effi ciently than fungi,

isnt it supposed to be plants are more efficient at acquiring something ! ? i know then its considering fungi as the form of carbon dioxide..
but i just wanted to know that isnt it like

IMO C

in the form of carbon dioxide modifies carbon.
in other words >> carbon IN WHICH FORM, >>>> in the form of carbon dioxide.
You can get rid of A B E due to the fact that it is not funqi that are in the form of carbon dioxide.
D - creates a subordinate clause out of main clause and becomes sentence with no point. - wrong.

so
only C left.

no, we compare plants and funqi relative to ONE ability to do something.

(C) Plants are more effi cient than fungi at acquiring carbon,

We put plants and funqi next to each other to show unambiguous comparison.

Does it help?

I think you are trying to compare funqi and carbon.....

Plants are more effi cient at acquiring carbon than are fungi, in the form of carbon dioxide, and converting it to energy-rich sugars.

This sentence compares how efficiently plants and fungi acquire carbon and convert it into sugars. The sentence construction needs to make clear that plants and fungi are the two topics being compared, and it must also clarify that in the form of carbon dioxide refers to carbon rather than to either plants or fungi.

(C) Correct. The sentence clearly compares plants to fungi, and in the form of carbon dioxide correctly modifies carbon.
