As a result of surging economic indicators, most analysts upgraded thre company's stock to a strong "buy" ignoring the advice of the head of a watchdog organization who warned that the company's product would prove not only dangerous but ineffective in the long run.

A. who warned that the company's product would prove not only dangerous but

B. warning that the company's product would prove not only dangerous and also

C. Warning that the company's product would prove itself to be both dangerous and

D who warned that the company's product would prove to be both dangerous and

In these type of Questions I am not able to understand what "who" modifies...

does it try to modify "organisation"


or "head of X"...
here "of X" acts as middlemen...

can someone please help

Can't decide between A and D....

Both look equally good....

A = not only X but [also] Y
D = both X and Y.

Hi Mohit. After looking at your post I am a litte confused..

I have seen many questions in which answer choices that partially fulfilled the [not only... but also ] construction were eliminated. You are considering A even though [also] is missing.. Is that allowed ?

Hi Mohit,

The Idiom is Not only but also. So A, B and E are ruled out and I would go with D. Itself in C seems to be redundant.

Hey, head of the organization who...
who clearly modifies head here, because it's a preposition phrase 'of' and noun after preposition can't be subject of the sentence.
Anyways my pick is D.
Although you are right, sometimes GMAT uses 'not only, but' idiom...a bit tricky
But when we have two grammatically correct choice, better pick one, which you are absolutely sure of. IMO D is best here.
Anyways whats the OA??

both x and y idiom correctly used here

I could be mistaken here but IMO "had warned" would have been more apropriate since we are talking about 2 past actions where the warning preceeded the upgrade.

Yes GMAT considers both to be correct

1. Not only X....but Y
2. Not only X....but also Y.

There are couple of examples of the same in OG-10. So it is similar to not X but [rather] Y.

OG says it is preferable to have not only...but also...complete...if there is a option between "not only....but also" and "not only....but".

But grammatically both are liked by GMAT.

As far as I know the OA were all having not only...but also both...

But the explantion of Q#216 and Q#241 in OG says that the options that were not having "also" are kicked out not because of "also" not present....but because of other errors that GMAT do not like...

So what I interpret from OG is that not only...but [also] is correct idiom....

Kaplan also say that "also" is optional.

Please correct me if my understanding is wrong.

OG says only in the explanation of #241 that not only ...but also is preferable over not only ...but [also] ....but i never saw a single problem where i can found not only ...but [also] is deemed correct...

But ...It is a matter of caution ...because on the Standard English,

Not only ...but [also] is correct ...also you can use synonym for "also" such as "as well" , "too" etc...

Not Only ...[but] also is also correct ...

And and and...

Not only ... is also correct in some of the cases ...

BUT AS FAR AS GMAT is Concerned ....GMAT never tested the incomplete idiom. GMAT always tested Not only ...but also construction...
