A question fresh from the oven (actually we created it about 2 weeks back). Try it out...


Although Logitech's recent press release credits its success to the innovation in its product division, its future success hinges on how closely its products are related to those of Apple's.

A. how closely its products are related to those of Apple's
B. its close relationship with Apple
C. on the relationship between its products and Apple's
D. how closely it is related to Apple
E. how closely its products are related to Apple's

A- 'of Apple's' is a wrong way of showing Apple's product.
B- is grammatically correct, but changes the meaning.
C- change in meaning. Rather than 'close relationship', this option seems to suggest the relationship between the products.
D- changes the meaning. Also 'it' doesn't have a clear antecedent.
E. Leaves this option choice. This is correct as to Apple's seems to suggest the comparison is between the products of two companies.

IMO E.

IMO E.

A - those of Apple's - awkward usage of pronoun to a possessive form
B - changes the meaning
C - its about how close the products are related and not about their relationship
D - it has no clear referent.
E - clear meaning.
Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.

THOSE...APPLE'S (REDUNDANCY)
B. its close relationship with Apple
CHANGES THE MEANING - switch from relationship between prodcts to companies
C. on the relationship between its products and Apple's
CHANGES THE MEANING - original sentence intends to convey how Logitech's products are related to Apple's products...and shows Apple's products are at a higher level of hierarchy than Logitech's products. But this choice (by using phrase 'BETWEEN') convey Apple's and Logitech's products are at the same level of hierarchy.
D. how closely it is related to Apple
IT refering to LOGITECH'S. CHANGES THE MEANING - switch from relationship between prodcts to companies
E. how closely its products are related to Apple's

The original sentence is wrong. Moreover there is no grammatical error in any of the five - but only E imparts the intended meaning.

A - We can write : "those of apple"(those is a demonstrative pronoun and "those" logically do refer to products) or "apple's product" - but not "those of apple's product".

The intended meaning is : products of Logitech are compared to the product of apple

So the correct is E.

B - the future sucess hinges on not on its close relationship with apple but on how closely its product are related to Apple's (product).

C - here "closely" is an adverb, modifying "related" - missing adverb is a major error. "How" is a subordinator and an adverb too - adverb of extent ( extent of the word "closely"). So here "how" has two function - grammar and meaning. Omitting this two is a fatal error.

D - same meaning error like B. I don't think "it" is ambiguous here as stated by all. It clearly refer to Logitech. I am aware about possessive pronoun rule - But this rule is not so much accepted.

If the intended meaning demands that - we can use "it" in this type of construction.

IMO : E

a) NO S-V, Verb, Modifier, Pronoun ERROR
b) Parallelism ERROR as those refers to products (its products are related to products of apple's)

A. how closely its products are related to those of Apple's INCORRECT
B. its close relationship with Apple Meaning Changed
C. on the relationship between its products and Apple's Awkward
D. how closely it is related to Apple INCORRECT, no antecedent of 'it'
E. how closely its products are related to Apple's CORRECT, products are implied (ellipses)

The sentence presents a disparity or a contrast. It states a fact that Logitech credits its success to the innovation in its product division. Then it states that the future success of Logitech depends on some other factor - how closely its products are related to Apple's products.

All SV pairs are accounted for and agree in number. The verb tenses have been used appropriately. The comparison is not stated correctly. Logitech's products have been compared to products of Apple's products. Note that "Apple's" implies "Apple's products". "those" also logically refer to "products". This results in distortion of the intended comparison. Either "Apple's" should be made "Apple" or "those" should be removed.

Choice B - Grammatically Correct but Incorrect Choice - This choice completely changes the intended meaning. This choice states that the success depends on relationship between the two companies. This is different from the intended meaning - how closely aligned the products of two companies are.

Choice C - Grammatically Correct but Incorrect Choice - This choice removes the contextually important word - "closely". Now the choice states that the success hinges on the "relationship" between the products instead of the "extent of close relation" between the products.

Choice D - Grammatically Correct but Incorrect Choice - This choice completely distorts the intended meaning since it no longer talks about the close alignment of the products of the two companies. It talks about the close alignment of the companies themselves.

Choice E - Correct Choice.

Glad to know that my reasoning was similar to yours but i would like to confirm how many Clauses did you make. I made 3 (mentioned below)
