Allowed Flaws to ace at least a 700

by ifernbar » Tue Sep 04, 2007 7:02 am
Hi!!

Im really a newby in this forum, although I have been practicing by my own for a month already...By the way I have to say that the material included in the wiki is just gorgeus!!It really helped me to cover some gaps, for example, with Probability!

Anyway lets go to the point!!As I was studying th other day, one issue pop up in my mind! Although It might not seem very important or at least just significant to the score, is really valuable for the preparation physology (or at least for mine)! and the thing is how many answers can you get wrong and still get a 760 for example.

I know that it's dependent on the difficulty and level of the questions, but lets imagine that you are doing great and that you get to the difficult question without messing even one, then how many can you get wrong to still get 780 or 800 for instance? And 700?

I checked on other post (unfortunatly I dont find them anymore) that one guy said that he scores 760 and he fall 4 in each section. Can that be true?
Does that mean that you can get more than 7 wrong for example in each section and still get 700?

Well It would be nice to hear your opinions and your experience about this theme, so do not hesitate to post even the dummiest comment.... :-)

Thanks and best regards from Munich!

Welcome to the forum :D

Its very difficult to answer your question. The logic used by GMAT is confidential to them and hence no one would be able to simulate the exam. GMAT prep is a reasonable indicator of the actual performance and it is difficult to predict the score with no of questions wrong. I had got a 41 in GMAT prep VA with 11 mistakes and a 41 other time with 7 or 8 mistakes...

You should focus on getting every quesiton right (asking for the impossible :D ). One important aspect is that you should not get consecutive questions wrong as this could affect your score (it is believed to be so)

Hi prasanna!!!

You really made my day!!! So are you saying that in the worst case with 7 wrong you can still get 41? Yuhuuuu!!Thats just what I wanted to hear!!

So probably, going on the same line, that means that with 4 wrong you can still achieve 51 (that seems to be the highest scores somebody posted on this forum. That by the way, is very weird. I dont really grasp how people could have got 760 and 780 points by just making 51 out of 60...Well maybe, the test questions -the ones that doesnt matter, the ones that are there for future testing porpuse- dont count in the total score? What do you say???)

On the other hand, you might be right I have to focus on pulling it off and accing it, that by the way, I'll do!! ;-) Just wanted to be sure If could get 800 If i mess up in a couple of questions....No just kidding but will see...at least im studying hard every day after work!!

Thanks for the forum to those who make it possible!
Best Regards!

You are right..No one can predict the no of questions wrong and the score. The score depends on the difficulty level at which you are performing consistently...You just need to concentrate on accuracy and pacing and you will soo find your threshold scoring level....

All the best

The test does not use the traditional scoring mechanism, percentage correct, that we are all used to. You can, in fact, get only 50-60% of the questions right and still score a 700 - it depends on the difficulty levels of the questions you get.

Even in the 99th percentile range (760 to 800) people are usually only getting about 70-80% correct.

The takeaway: you will get lots of questions wrong. No matter how good you are, the test will give you things that you cannot do in the given time. Be aware of that before you go in, or it will mess up your pacing b/c you won't "let go" of really hard problems and your score will go down.
