Cooks

by vishubn » Wed Dec 17, 2008 7:43 am
. Some good cooks are gourmet cooks who pride themselves on always using extravagantly rich ingredients in elaborate recipes. Some good cooks can be characterized as fast-food cooks. They may use rich ingredients as long as the recipes are easy to follow and take little time. Other good cooks are health food enthusiasts, who are concerned primarily with the nutritional value of food. But even though not all good cooks are big eaters, they all enjoy preparing and serving food.
If the information in the passage is true, which one of the following CANNOT be true?
(A) Most good cooks do not use extravagantly rich ingredients.
(B) Everyone who enjoys preparing and serving food is a good cook.
(C) More good cooks who use extravagantly rich ingredients are big eaters than are good cooks who do not use such ingredients.
(D) There are fewer good cooks who enjoy serving and preparing food than there are good cooks who are big eaters.(E) Gourmet cooks, fast-food cooks, and cooks who are health food enthusiasts are all big eaters.

The key to this question is in the following sentence. But even though not all good cooks are big eaters, they all enjoy preparing and serving food.

Not all good cooks are big eaters
All good cooks enjoy preparing and serving food.

Answer choice D can’t be true.

(D) There are fewer good cooks who enjoy serving and preparing food than there are good cooks who are big eaters.

This goes against the information provided. This answer choice says: There are more good cooks who are big eaters than good cooks who enjoy serving and preparing the food.

We know this isn’t possible because we were told not all good cooks are big eaters but ALL good cooks enjoy preparing and serving food.

SOME <MOST <ALL

This is a typical LSAT question!

If the information in the passage is true, which one of the following CANNOT be true?
(A) Most good cooks do not use extravagantly rich ingredients.

some can be 0 , so most can be a possibility...

(B) Everyone who enjoys preparing and serving food is a good cook.
can be possible...although details are not clear...
typical case of flaw argument...but here it is valid

(C) More good cooks who use extravagantly rich ingredients are big eaters than are good cooks who do not use such ingredients.
again... can be possible

(D) There are fewer good cooks who enjoy serving and preparing food than there are good cooks who are big eaters.

Not possible...clearly mention

it is given that
Big eaters: Not all ( 0-100 )
Servers: all ( 100)

(E) Gourmet cooks, fast-food cooks, and cooks who are health food enthusiasts are all big eater

again possible...

One more vote for D)

Similar to Dmateer's explanation that D) cannot be true since the passage states all good cooks enjoy preparing and serving food and not all are big eaters

I would go with option D as the correct option
