Aiming at ISB

by b4u400 » Sun Jan 19, 2014 2:19 am
Hi All,
Apologies, is this sort of question was already answered, But I didn't want to take any chances/waste time. I'm a newbie to this site, and my profile is:

in my 10th- 85%
12th - 73%
Btech(Computer science) - 68%- (I'm not sure about GPA conversion)
Master's in UK (MSC in comp networks and security)-about 55%
Work exp: (working in UK)
1 and half year (1year fulltime + 6 months part time) in a Mc Donald's as customer service assistant
6 months part time (the same time when I was working part time in MC D) in a super marker(Sainsbury's) as online shopper, So I assume it can be 2 years fulltime if we combine both MC D and Sainsbury's Job together???)

3 years 2 months(still working) in reputed email management company as SiteOps Manager, who manages all hardware purchases, world wide, for a Billion Dollar company. Manages Datacenter operations World wide, Manages a Team of 10+.

Age:26
Extra curricular activities:
Participated in variety of national level technical symposiums(Both technical and cultural and won prizes, since my school days till now) , Like Participating in state level chess championships, Speech Competitions, Essay writing, Paper presentations, Poster Presentations, Quiz Competitions, Marathons, Cycling Competitions, Have Karate Yellow Belt, Learning horse Riding, Plays Cricket, Yoga, Gym.... Bla Bla Bla....), Participated in several drives with Non-Profit Organisations from my school days,

Business:

I'm one of the partner in an Ad agency in India and Ad designer as well, started about 6 months back and turnover is about a 50 Lakh Rupees

This is my Profile at a glance!!! Not sure if I'm speaking a lot or this is the way to mention everything from childhood?
I'm taking My Gmat on Feb15, but till now didn't take any practice test officially. But I've a strong feeling that I may get 600 to 700. But As I said I didn't take any practice tests, so I'm Just speculating based on my knowledge.

Aim: I'm aiming at ISB, not sure for my profile, how to justify an MBA in Marketing/Consulting (Because my education background is engineering and my work experience is in computer Software/Hardware field, of course, a lot of it is managing),

If I'm unable to get into ISB, I would like to look at top School in USA. And I assume most of the schools academic year starts at Aug. So not sure, If I get a good score in this Feb, wether I have got enough time or not.

My Main concern is about Essays while I apply, as I'm less confident in justifying my admission into consulting/marketing field. Any Tips/ways to improve Essay writing, with respect to B-school admissions. Should I look into approach any admission consultant (I don't think it is needed, but I don't want to take chances)?

Thank you so much for your help.

I won't make give any evaluation here based on the GMAT score you are expecting because you have mentioned a range of 100 points. Focusing on other aspects of your profile, you undergraduate and master's GPA are definitely on the lower side. A good GMAT score and GPA are important because they show you can withstand the academic rigors of a business school. There is no point in mentioning your part-time work experience. Your full time work- experience of 4+ years is decent enough to apply to business schools. By managing a team of 10+ people and being a partner in a company, you definitely have the leadership skills required for students applying to business schools. Applying for fall 2014 admit does not make any sense. Try to score well on your GMAT and apply in R1 next year. You will have a lot of time in your hand to work on creating a stellar application. Essays form a very important part of your application and i suggest you approach an admissions consultant if you are not very confident with it. An alternative option would be to complete your application yourself and get it reviewed by alumni of your target business school. Download the free e-book on how to get into a top business school at : https://www.interviewbay.com/mba/how-to- ... -ebook.php

Good Luck!

Hi,

First, you should research on ISB selection criteria, ISB evaluates candidates based on three parameters 1)Leadership ability 2)Diversity 3)Academic background/analytical ability. To assess first two parameters ISB evaluates your essays and recommendations along with quality of work experience. For third parameter ISB admission committee keenly considers your academic performance. However, ISB does not restrict candidates by "cut off" criteria. ISB also assess analytical ability based on the GMAT score. While a good GMAT score helps, ISB does not have a cut off for the GMAT. An average score, for instance, can be compensated by achievements in other areas. So focus on all these important parameters.

I always suggest applicants to go for professional assistance if applicant is not sure about how to structure content of essays. Preferably you should consult ISB alum who helped applicants previously and who can dedicate time in structuring your essays. Let me know if you have any questions...

Manish

Hey there,

Thanks for all the info - the more you provide, the better it is! We love it. You have what appears to be impactful professional experience but your academics are a little bit on the lower side. All that said, to be honest, let's chat once you have your GMAT score in hand.

I know that isn't what you want to hear after spending time typing out that post but it's the truth. Until you have a score in hand, this is a purely hypothetical conversation and my answer would hardly hold much weight. You are a different candidate with a 720 and 680. You gave a 100 point range. I'm giving you a 40 point range. Even then it's a vastly different profile. Does that make sense?

As for positioning and story - that's something we can definitely talk through. And definitely wait until R1 next year.

Once you take your GMAT in 2 days, reach out to us and sign up for a free consultation (why not? It's free!) - it'll give us a chance to talk on the phone and I conduct all of ours personally. We can take this conversation offline and talk through the nuances of your profile.

Good luck on Saturday!

Hi All,
Thank you so much for your valuable comments, Yes, for now I'm concentrating on my GMAT and will get back to you once I get the score, meanwhile, I can see every one is speaking about the "essays", but I don't see ISB is requesting for essays as part of the admission process. Could you please confirm which "essays" you are speaking about?
Thanks
