Hey guys,

This is my first post so bear with me (I found out about this great site AFTER I wrote my GMAT lol).

I am a recent graduate from University with a Bachelors of Commerce (Major: Economics and Mgt Science, Minor: Finance). I was an average student with around a B- avg in my final two years so it is absolutely crucial for me to do well on the GMAT in order to have a chance to get into an MBA program. Since I have no work experience and the job situation is dire, I decided to try and pursue a Co-op MBA from a University in Toronto area (perfect for me since it does not require any work experience).

Anyways I finished my exams on April 26th and signed up to take the GMAT May 11th. I bought Princeton's Cracking the GMAT book and also did some questions from the OG 12. I studied about 4-5 hours for about 10 days.

I only took two practice tests from the GMATPrep:

GMATPrep Practice Test #1 - 580 (May 2nd)
GMATPrep Practice Test #2 - 620 (May 9th)

I was familiar with most topics in the quant section. My verbal wasnt amazing and I did good on RC and questions from long passages but my SC was weak. I just used to read the sentence and pick the one that sounded right. My quant wasnt amazing but I did alot of quant in University so I thought i was ok after doing some practice questions.

I was fairly confident that I was capable of pulling off a 650 on test day. However, the morning of my test I got nervous and I walked into the GMAT center unconfident. I knew that the first 4-5 questions are really important but I dont think I spent enough time on test day making sure I got them right. I knew I was'nt doing too well when I was getting fairly easy questions during the exam. After the math part I took a break and felt really down that I had bombed the quant section. I went int verbal half hearted and completed it.

My final score was a 580 37Q and 32V.

I was completely devasted because my friend who also studied with me those 10 days got a 680!
But anyways I am planning to write it again June 12th (stupid 30 day rule). I need some advice of the best way to approach the GMAT given 30 days.
I need to really improve on my SC and hard quant questions.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for reading my boring story

I hate to point out the obvious, but did you really expect to magically improve 50 points from practice tests?

Yea I guess I was studying the wrong books but I only had two weeks so I didnt have much time.
And to answer the question above me...I was fairly confident that I could score 650. I mean I was in the wrong scoring range and my true abilities were not really being tested because most of the questions I was getting were really easy. But I guess thats my fault for not taking the proper time to make sure that I got the first 5-6 questions correct.

What's worse is that my friend who is a similar student to me (academically speaking) scored a 680 and we studied exactly the same time together. But he told me he had spent 30 minutes on the first 10 questions to make sure they were all correct. In hindsight I maybe should have done the same..

But thanks for the books recommendations! I will study using the books mentioned and hopefully my next post will be about how I beat the GMAT scoring 700+ :D

Biggest mistake I think you made is that you only took GMATPrep twice, and without enough time to learn from the test (hence your final test score was right in line with your GMATPrep tests).

My advice is that you use the the following materials:
-OG12, quant review and verbal review.
-OG Companion 12 from GMATFix
-GMATPrep (I know there are only 2 tests, but the software has over 1200 questions, and they're the best prep questions anywhere, so I always have my clients work towards mastering those). GMATPrep is not all it can be if you don't take the time to go through detailed solutions. This site has a great community that will write up solutions for you in minutes. You can also find detailed solutions and video solutions on GMATFix (disclosure: I'm the owner of gmatfix).

Finally, if you were my client I would tell you to structure your study by topic early on, (for example set aside time to study just Number Properties). You could do this with tools such as Manhattan GMAT's OG Tracker, or GMATFix' OG Companion & Solutions Engine. Later to take drills and tests of GMATPrep Qs until you've mastered as many of those as you can.

Best of luck
-Patrick
