Do business schools call your employer??

by witwiyl » Tue Jun 03, 2008 7:05 pm
Once a school has interest in you and invites you to an interview, or I guess at any time during the application process, do any business schools call your current or former employers? I wouldn't mind if they called my former, but my current job doesn't know I am applying to business schools. I don't want them to know for the obvious fears (losing my job, losing responsibilities, etc).

Any insight would be great, thanks.

I believe most schools outsource 'application/reference checks' to an outside agency.

So what exactly does that mean?? Does that outside company call?? Or do they just do a background type check where they pull up your employment info with a social security number?

Background checks

by Jana_Blanchette » Thu Aug 07, 2008 8:01 pm
B-schools will not contact your current employer directly. They are well aware that many people cannot tell their current employers about their plans to attend MBA programs.

The background checks are usually outsourced to a 3rd party that specializes in handling background checks. The background checks are conducted via a confidential process.

Check with your HR department, they will know how the process is handled. If you are not comfortable talking to HR, you can usually find it via their forms, paperwork, and/or website. They publish this process because there are many reasons to conduct an employment check (e.g. mortgages).

It is all confidential - your current employer and manager will have no notification about the background check.

Hope that helps!
