It was not long after the 1930s commenced that such baritone singers as Bing Crosby and Russ Columbo contributed to the popularization of a type of romantic, soothing singing that came to be called "crooning."

a) It was not long after the 1930s commenced that such baritone singers as Bing Crosby and Russ Columbo contributed to

b) Not long after the commencement of the decade of the 1930s, baritone singers such as Bing Crosby and also Russ Columbo decided to contribute in

c) Not long after the 1930s commenced, baritone singers like Bing Crosby and Russ Columbo contributed to

d) Not long after the beginning of the 1930s commencement, baritone singers like Bing Crosby and Russ Columbo had contributed to

e) It was not long after the 1930s commenced that baritone singers such as Bing Crosby and Russ Columbo had contributed in

>> So, I know that many teachers have warned against relying too much on hearing when it comes to SC - but in this case, the right answer (A) just sounds really weird. The usage of "such as" seems wrong. Shouldn't it be "baritone singers such as..."? At least that's what we'll normally say in daily speech. But I know I can't assume that's wrong just because it sounds weird. Can someone pls enlighten me on why choice A is correct?

I chose C, knowing that usage of "like" is wrong when it's a list. But it was the best choice out there. If "like" in C is changed to "such as", would that make the sentence correct?

Thanks in advance!

Hi aspirant2011,

Thanks for replying to my question - can you give some common examples of that usage other than the one in the question? Just for me to get a better grasp on this. If not, then it's cool. Just one question, anyway. No biggie :)

According to me, use of "Such.. as" is preferred over "like" in this case.

Baritone singers like X & Y = Baritone singers similar to, but not including X & Y.
Such baritone singers as X & Y = Baritone singers similar to, and including X & Y.

I hope that helps.
