about the idiom "make"

by Amadalia » Wed Feb 26, 2014 3:21 am
Good day
in the idiom section of Manhattan SC page 159 I found the

Right: The leader MADE IT POSSIBLE FOR us TO RESIST oppression.
(Note: The IT properly refers to rhe infinitive TO RESIS'f.)

WRONG:The leader MADE POSSIBLE TO RESIST oppression.

My question is: I'm looking for good reason to understand what makes the last sentence wrong, I know its idioms and there is nothing to explain about them, but in many idiom cases I found straight forward reasons which have helped to memorize them .
Thanks in advance [/b]

Hi Amadalia,

The 'wrong' sentence that you listed has a couple of problems:

1) The sentence does not tell us WHO will 'resist oppression.' Is it the leader who will resist oppression or someone else? That type of wording is ambiguous/vague, and sentences are not supposed to be ambiguous/vague.

2) Also, since the leader 'made' something, we need a noun (or in this case, a pronoun) to tell us what the leader 'made.' The 'wrong' sentence does not have a noun/pronoun.
