A Word Problem II

Can anyone help to explain the question attached? I do not really understand the reasoning. thanks!

You are actually looking for the ratio of defective chips for the four shipments to the total number of chips. This is equal to (2 + 5 + 6 + 4)/(5 000 + 12 000 + 18 000 + 16 000) = 17/51 000 = 1/3 000. This means that 1 chip in 3000 is expected to be defective. Since you have 60 000 chips, you should expect to have 60 000/3 000 = 20 defective chips
